Gravatar Wait, let me PC myself: not "die of HIV," but "die because of complications due to AIDS." Sigh.

Gravatar Dude, are you okay? You need a hug or something?

Gravatar No, I'm fine. I just think Winick is using the same old bag of tricks.

Gravatar That is one fucking dour bag of tricks.

Gravatar Not really. Shock value sells.

Gravatar Still, a big fat "no" on Winick playing my kid's birthday party.

Gravatar I hear Eminem is playing the virus.

Gravatar Kevin Smith revealed that Mia was a prostitute when she first appeared. That's not new, and sadly, neither is the fact that some prostitutes do get AIDS.

At least this development respects what has already been established about the character.

Gravatar I thought this was Fanboy Rampage, but the Winick/GREEN ARROW entry appears to be out of a Newsarama comments thread. My browser must be all fucked up.

Gravatar "Kevin Smith revealed that Mia was a prostitute when she first appeared."

Ah. I did not know that. I read the series up until Winick's second arc but I that must have slipped my mind. Will edit.

Still, the point remains: how many times will Winick use HIV & AIDS in his stories and then appear on TV to talk about it?

Gravatar Warren, Graeme "borrows" from Newsarama all the time.

Gravatar well, whatever evildoer DC decides to have rape her is sure going to be sorry...?

but on the other hand, i think the 40 year old men who read green arrow will really learn an important lesson and not become 40-year old man-whores. that's got to be worth at least 5 or 11 GLAAD awards, right?

Gravatar "how many times will Winick use HIV & AIDS in his stories and then appear on TV to talk about it?"

wow. do you know how boneheaded that sounds? as a gay person with several HIV positive friends... a former boyfriend who's been pos for close to 20 years now... and a few friends who've died from the disease, i'm not sure you can talk about AIDS too much. especially in an age when young people have come to the conclusion that AIDS is not something to take seriously and AIDS infections are starting to creep back up.

Gravatar You're funny.

Gravatar "You're funny."

That was directed at abhay.

Gravatar I take AIDS seriously. More people should talk about it.

Gravatar "I take AIDS seriously. More people should talk about it."

As long as it's not Judd Winick, and as long as it's not in Green Arrow, then?

Gravatar I remember when comics were for kids and all Green Arrow had to worry about was junkies.

Gravatar Ah, those halcyon days ... No, wait, Speedy was addicted to heroin, not Halcyon. Never mind.

Gravatar Oh, Michael. It's going to be too easy to have fun with you.

Gravatar Let's not lose focus here. We're supposed to be about unfairly mocking those strangers outside.

Gravatar How are comics ever going to appeal to a mainstream readership if writers won't keep their heroes attached to a single, clearly-defined, generation-destroying crisis?

Gravatar "As long as it's not Judd Winick, and as long as it's not in Green Arrow, then?"

Sure, but relying on Hollywood connections to promote the comic containing the issue in question and doing that over and over just sort of rubs me the wrong way. It's stupid, I know.

"It's going to be too easy to have fun with you."

Bring it on!

Gravatar "It's stupid, I know."

DINGDINGDINGDING.

Gravatar What I've been saying has nothing to do with the three quotes in your blog entry. But thanks for implying I'm irrational and unintelligent. That really made me see your point. Wait, you didn't have one. You were too busy mocking people.

I'd like to know what you have to say, Chris. Really.

"I'm this || close from link blogging Fanboy Rampage in Fanboy Rampage."

You already did.

"Let's try and raise the bar, huh Mike?"

This isn't about a bar. You just didn't like my opinion.

Gravatar Oliver QUEEN. I mean come on.

Gravatar Once again, AIDS isn't the issue, it's Winick's tactics. I'm all for "realism" in comics.

And second, let's look at it from the character perspective. I found Mia interesting at the beginning because she was someone who, since Oliver adopted her, would be a cool supporting character in the series. I was kind of annoyed when Winick (I think, it might have been someone else) decided to go the crime-fighting route, because then she would cease to be a relatively unique character in the DCU (when it seems that just about everyone in a superhero comic is a superhero).

Continued...

Gravatar Ah, forget it. If I try to describe what a writer should do with a character, I just sound like a deranged fanboy.

It's a sensitive subject. I acknowledge that. But I disagree with the person in your post that says this isn't a gimmick. It definitely is.

Gravatar I'm curious how Winick plans on telling the story without it being "about an abbreviated life span." It'd be unique if he just didn't kill her off.

Gravatar I know it may be tasteless, but I'm picturing a cover of Captain American punching out the AIDS Virus.

Gravatar For the record, the only person here whose opinion I'm taking seriously so far is Sean's.

If you got something to say, say it.
