Gravatar I think that was his wife's demand. Keep him at work where he is less obnoxious, keep him from turning into wet leaves.

Gravatar Was that part of the deal?

I imagine it would have to have be.

Gravatar They let him stay because the Aspers -- owners of Canwest -- are freakshows just like Peretz.

Gravatar lol john

you took the words out of my mouth, er my keyboard..whatever.

Gravatar i like that NewDonkey was able to state "And now the magazine has been bought by a Canadian media firm that presumably cannot be accused of neo-conservative views." without offering any evidence to back up the assumption. why do we presume that they're not neo-conservatives? because they're canadian? are all canadians assumed to be wooly liberals even large media conglomerates? better yet why presume anything at all? why not spend five minutes googling the company and find out for themselves? bunch of lazy half-assed faux-centrist goits

Gravatar As long as they don't get Mark Steyn, I'll be happy.

Gravatar "why do we presume that they're not neo-conservatives? because they're canadian? are all canadians assumed to be wooly liberals even large media conglomerates?"

Yeah, it's like how much crazier does David Frum have to get?

Gravatar Exactly. The Aspers, despite somewhat liberal views domestically, have a hard-line right wing viewpoint on all issues regarding Israel on the Middle East.

They probably kept Marty Peretz around because they actually like what he has to say.

Gravatar New Donkey writes:

Despite its very diverse product (including anti-Iraq War writers like Spencer Ackerman, and seriously lefty writers like John Judis and Rick Perlstein)...

Yeah, that's true. It's not like Peretz didn't can Ackerman's industrious, ungrateful ass. [ha ha. total snark!]

Christ, fella, if you're gonna side with Marty, at least have some idea of who he's got on staff...

Gravatar No surprise here. Can-West has a rather 'US right-wing' reputation with their politics up here. They own the National Post, the most rightwing broadsheet in Canada. Izzy Asper (owner of Can-West) is notoriously involved in rightwing politics.

Gravatar Could perhaps the new owners are not want to make major changes right away? Buy first, evaluate and make major changes later.

Gravatar If I know Izzy Asper, Marty Peretz is exactly the kind of guy he'd have in charge.

Under Can-West management, I wouldn't expect any changes in the TNR except that it will continue its slow and steady rightward shift.

Gravatar Ah, dudes, Izzy's dead. It's his son Leonard who's heading CanWest now.

Izzy was pretty friendly with the Liberal Party at one time, though that was well in the past. Leonard is clearly a Harper booster, which means that CanWest has pretty much ceased to be "liberal domestically" and become more a mouthpiece for the Conservative Party of Canada, aka Canada's New Government.

Their National Post is the flagship for Harper boosting and Liberal-NDP-Green-lefty-bashing, but all their papers indulge in it. Propaganda pieces from the Fraser Institute regularly appear on their op-ed pages, and Global News, their TV arm, feeds us a steady diet of "more scary shit to be afraid of OMG OMG", just like its ideological mentor Fox News.

In spite of that, my local CanWest rag is still worth reading because it has about a dozen really good columnists and about as many good reporters who, as far as I can tell, don't take their marching orders from HQ in Winnipeg.

Whether that will happen with TNR is anybody's guess.
