You seem to forget that Dr. Daniel Micallef was a sitting MP, who actually left his seat as speaker to become a Minister during the 1981-1987 legislature.

No I didn't but I did not want to mention a matter that would have added nothing to the substance of the argument for the simple reason that there were no sitting Opposition MPs to vote pro or contra the motion appointing the Speaker in 1981.

That this was no case of magnanimity can be seen from Micallef's return to government benches is interesting after the defeat of the Government's motion on private schools when the Government wanted to return to its comfortable 3-seat majority.
