Yep, that's why we moved up to Rocklin. Sure we could have bought a crusty old shack in San Jose but a fixer upper for $500k + is not my idea of fun!
That condo my parents bought back in 1989 is now worth a small fortune! It's worth almost 2x as much as the place where I grew up which was a nice ranch style house on 3.5 acres!
I'm just glad we bought when we did back in 1999. Our house has nearly doubled in value since then. Houses are getting pretty expensive up here too, but you still get a lot of house for the money. You just have to deal with the summer heat......
Overall the location is pretty good. 1 hour to Tahoe, 2 hours to the Bay Area, and that's pretty much all I need!
Someday we'll live by the ocean again, but right now it ain't in the cards.

Wow! 1 million for a 2-bedroom!
Here in Bangalore, India I can get a HUGE 4-5 bedroom apartment, or a house in a nice place for like Rs. 50 Lacs...that's like $100,000 in real terms and around $500,000 on PPP terms...
Maybe you should really move to India

Well cuz', there's always western Massachusetts...hehe. The land price is low and the job market is good but then again there's no great deal on good sushi, surfing, sunning, or any other "s" words. But on the bright side its affordable.

By the way, us Red Sox fans would very much like to thank the Giants for freeing up Billy Mueller a few years ago... Thanks to him we not only have quality at third but as of last night we have the first man in history to hit consecutive grand slams from both sides of the plate. Boston's looking forward to seeing y'all in the series... damn yankees....

Those prices are pretty damn insane! Under those circumstances, your plan sounds like the best bet ATM (BTW, it is impossible to have too much land around you, within reason).
But I must warn you that, from what I've heard and seen from friends and family, those long, drawn out house construction deals are a severe threat to joy, love, sanity and everything else that is good and holy. Tread cautiously, and try to get some acceptable living conditions built up ASAP, if you go down that route.
