Tired!

Gravatar Not to make light of an awful situation, but I must recall a scene from a Woody Allen movie:

"if they told me I had a tumor, I was gonna kill myself. The only thing that might-ve stopped me - MIGHT'VE - is that my parents would be devastated. I would have to shoot them also, first. And then I have an aunt and uncle - you know - it would've been a blood bath."

Which must be met with another quote from The Hours when Clarissa is faced with the man she loves who is dying with AIDS who insists he is only living to "satisfy her": "That is what we do. That is what people do. They stay alive for each other."

And that is how it should be.

And that is how WHAT should be? We only exist for other people? We have no purpose except social interconnections?
Sorry, James, but I don't accept that.
Beyond literary munderings, man still fails to answer existential questions when God is left out of the equation.

Gravatar No, Doug. The point is not that meaning is found in other people but that, at the very least, one need to consider others (most especially one's family) before considering taking one's life. Ultimately, suicide is a selfish act.

This doesn't mean it's unforgivable: we can't underestimate the power of extreme duress on one's decision-making abilities.

That's the hole in your argument, James.
We only have reason to continue to exist because God has made us to exist.
If there were no God, there would be no right and wrong, no 'moral law written on our hearts'. Society doesn't give us morals; societies work within the moral framework set up by God to keep us upright citizens, and often societies which have attempted to "go Godless" have descended in barbarism-Communist and Islamic are good examples of poor societies.

"one need to consider others (most especially one's family) before considering taking one's life." -doesn't work, as often the person who commits suicide thinks that their families will be better off without them.

"God sets the number of our days, and He decides when we've had enough. For His children, He decides when we are ready for More. It is a wonderful, joyous thing to be at Peace with God."

Well, technically, Islamic nations are not at all "godless", quite the contrary. They will emphatically tell you that they do what they do because Allah commanded it in the Koran and because they think a certain kind of paradise awaits them where they (oddly) get to do all the things that were forbidden here.

I think what they generally yell is "God is great" even as they drive a plane into a building or slice someone's head off.

I'm not equating Islam with Christianity, just making an observation.

Gravatar James-Islam is Godless, but not godless.
They do not worship the true God, so they are indeed Godless.
