This post just proves that Aravosis is right. Not only are our Senators worthless, but groups like Naral don't fight when it counts. I don't follow groups like Naral closely, but it appears to me that they are more interested in fundraising than actually doing anything.

Here's my question; where the hell is the physical protest? All this calling and faxing is nice, but where the hell is the million person march, descending on the capital to make sure the filibuster is supported? Its not like these organizations did not have the time, or the resources to put together something like this, but if people really care about this issue, they should be clogging the streets of DC in protest right now, and not making a few phone calls.
I don't balme individuals; I blame NOW, NARAL, and Planned Parenthood, etc. This is their defining moment; this is the moment that others will look back on and say, hey this is when everything went wrong.
And you know what? They are standing around with their hands in their pockets.
In South America, when the governmnet tries to raise the bus fare by 25% they take over the capital building and kick out the legislature.
Here, they want to appoint a Supreme Court Justice that WILL reverse the legacy that they are supposedly trying to protect, and where the hell is the leadership and protest from NARAL and NOW?
The truth is, they have used this issue as a boogeyman for so long to get democracts elected that they never thought about what to do when the boogeyman actually showed up.
Well, BOO! The boogeyman is here, and is set to be confirmed in about an hour unless a miracle happens.

I just called and said how disappointed I was in NARAL for their continued support of Chaffee. I mentioned that NARAL had supported Chaffee over two pro-choice Democrats. The woman who took my call said, "Thank you for your comments." I said, "I hope you pass them on." She replied, "I record all calls."
When NARAL is outlawed, maybe she can get a job with the administration.

I am not a member of a "disinformation campaign", in spite of your comments otherwise. I am a citizen of the United States who is fighting for the Constitution.
There is a difference.
You, sir, are part of disinformation campaign; your role in the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on the confirmation of Judge Alito were mere formalities of acquiesence.
I plan to send money to whatever Democrat will run against you because you are little more than a meat puppet for this presidency.

Frankly, I think NARAL has been pretty ineffective for years now. It is becoming more and more clear that Roe v Wade is going to be overturned. What's the backup plan? Has there been any push to pass a US Constitutional Amendment backing choice? Any push to do the same in state Constitutions? Nope. They seem to have no strategy at all other than back Roe at all costs, and they've just dropped that one. The fact of the matter is that the right wing has been effectively eroding abortion rights for decades, primarily by targeting abortion providers. Planned Parenthood stands up to them and is, in a very real sense, on the front lines. They are far more deserving of your money than a so-called "action" league that doesn't take action when the chips are down.

Agreed. How depressing. Special Interest Groups have lost their cache with me - years ago.
At the end of each year I would assess my success and send off a check(s) to different groups - Feminist Majority Foundation was one. After the "Gingrich Revolution" and the republicans threat to defund the Left I didn't receive my membership donation pledge that year, curious and wanting to send the $250 I called their Arlington, VA office and spoke with someone in fund raising and told them I had the check all made out could the send my membership pledge card - never heard from them.
The number of women in congress is a statement in and of itself as to their and similar groups effectiveness - shame - 'cause I wanted to help - they lost me. Now I support individual candidates.
Everything you said Jane is true. We are so unorganized on our side. The republicans have a plan - shit that it is - and they stick to it - what me worry? Heck of a job! How sad.

I've done some volunteer work for Pro-Choice Colorado (local NARAL) but no more -- they typify the worst examples of the brain dead Lefty special interest groups.
Earth to NARAL -- anyone with an (R) behind their name is ANTI-WOMEN'S RIGHTS.
A Pro-Choice GOoPer is all talk, no action; as soon as you get off knees, they will only remember you long enough to note their conquest on the bathroom wall -- for a good time, call 1-800-NARAL.
I know that this wasn't Janes point but I think the fact that the fight to filibuster Alito is springing up from the blogs (i.e. the grassroots) and not from the established interest groups is a good thing. We have relied on interest groups and the associated Washington DC establishment for too long. This fight isn't about special interests, it is about what we believe in. In the days ahead we need to be vigilant that the press doesn't frame this as a case where once again the Dems were captives of special interests. This fight to stop Alito is not a special interest group operation. It comes from the ordinary people who form the base of the democratic party.

Very, very disappointed in NARAL. Actually, in recent years their spokeswomen have been a total disaster.
Thanks. this current fight will expose all the weakwilled dems. And we will not forget.
People will not remember what words are spoken in this debate, but the country will long remember the consequences of Alito on the bench. All of our rights are now in question.
And Byrd is no longer my knight in shining armor -- and he can give all the barnburning speeches he wants in the Senate, but I know where his heart lies. And it lies not with the women and minorities of this country.
How can he willfully ignore what Alito and Bush want to do to our constitution? Money? Old Allegiance to conservative principles?

Democratic groups (NARAL, AFL-CIO and the individual unions) have gotten adept at "keeping the skeer up" to keep the money coming in. Ditto the pols.
They have counted on some degree of moderation to keep events from getting out of hand, and grew complacent and flabby.
Now, moderation is out the window, and the folks at the top of the Democratic groups have gone quisling on us, for fear of losing their position.
As Jefferson foresaw, it is time for citizens to put things right.
Do NOT gave a dime, or a minute of your time, to any pol or group that is not currently and actively representing your interests.
We could get better results putting FDL on the payroll than donating to NARAL.

Just got a very snotty "thank you" from NARAL and I think she hung up on me.
Over the years I've given lots of money to NARAL. But I decided even before this not to do so any longer.
Frankly, the money they ask for should now go to ways to go AROUND the law...transporting women, making prescriptions to emergency contraception available (even if it's regular pills taken as directed to be like a morning after pill)....
'Planned Parenthood at least does something for women in the form of healthcare, etc.
NARAL should come down off their ivory tower and get their hands dirty and do something useful. How about getting women in Mississippi bussed over to a blue state for an abortion if they can't get it now, for example?
This is the way I want all the groups to go--PP, NOW, NARAL--into the nitty gritty of actually serving women's needs. The courts are gone--we need plans to get out the information and put in place the networks for transport, temporary housing, etc. involved in providing access to safe abortion for all women. And, laying in supplies of birtch control pills and getting the info out on "day after" instructions.

You guys really are the best. I have laughed so much this last week reading your post and listening to your whack job leaders (Kennedy & Kerry). I keep conjuring up visions of you girly men gnashing your teeth, pulling out your hair, & screaming. It’s almost over and then you can get your wits about you again. Once more Thanks for the entertainment.
Sorry it’s hard to type, Teddy had me giggling again.

I call bullshit on this post.
Really, Jane? When you called NARAL, they told you they "didn't consider Chafee's vote on cloture to be significant?"
Those were their exact words?
I'd be surprised to hear that was true. It would also be at odds with what most people who are calling NARAL seem to be hearing from the folks answering the phone.

I wouldn't say that "the dems" have gotten it down to the wire. I would attribute that to the (unexpectedly) involved netroots community. It's important to focus on that. Example: if it weren't for our outrage, even Feinstein (D-CA) would still be standing shoulder to shoulder with Frist.

Get your facts straight woman... if you are going to keep up this sham attack on Naral then please fucking add SEIU to the list who gave the Rep. Senator HCA is talking now, after Specter gave Scalito "straight A's" across the board. He's pissing and moaning about Democratic "attacks" on other nominees (obviously forgetting about Miers). Straight A's for a liar, a bigot and a misogynist.

One of the best reasons to oppose Chaffee is to gain another Democrat in a reliably blue state.
Exactly. The Democratic Party has got to realize that the incumbent seats we're going to peel off are the ones in blue states. That's how the GOP did it (in reverse.) I understand the temptation to think "he's a decent Republican" or to remember the days when we had honest disagreements between the party, but that's gone; we've got to let go of that, and take the seats that should be ours.

what losing roe v. wade would mean for me --
today's my 59th birthday so obviously i'm not having to sweat an unwanted pregnancy anymore.
nonetheless, being able to decide my reproductive life has felt not as much a privacy issue, as a slavery issue.
again i would return to second-class citizenship beholden to the powers that be -- conservative, hyperreligious, far right-wing men.

The only hope is to find and publish a list of prominent Republicans who have had abortions: wives, girl friends, and daughters. They're out there and the list is most likely long. The ethics of privacy, in this case, are trumped by their duplicious behavior.
They'll still get abortions, even after Alito, because they are wealthy. At least their political cover will be blown and they won't be able to pretend anymore.

Your use of the phrase "Roe v. Wade _was passed_" shows that you know what Roe is -- a piece of legislation.
The only problem with that is that our elected representatives make legislation, not 7 justices of the Supreme Court.
The sooner Roe is overruled the sooner we can get back to self-government on the abortion question. Then we can see what the majority really wants -- sensible prohibitions on this ongoing atrocity.
Roll on Justice Alito! One more and we'll have it.

Yeah, Yeah, I know. What's the difference between the Philadelphia Eagles and a dollar? You get four quarters from a dollar! Why doesn't Camden have a football team? Because then Philadelphia would want one!
But still... First the cloture... Then this...
