Question

Cab Scooter be prosecuted in any/one state court for traison? Since he is asking for proof of VW classified status.

I read somewhere that corps weren't piling money on the thugs just because republicans are "business friendly" but because republicans would trash any businesses that didn't give piles of cash. Kinda like the mafia.

Read that around the same time Harry Reid was comparing the thugs to the mafia. Wish I could remember where.

I'd love to see his Tammy Fae wife in the slammer.

I know this is one of those "schadenfreude hotline" sorts of posts -- but I couldn't help myself.

Anyone kn ow what a pardon smells like?

WHOOT! Talk about synchronicity!

Redd sorry for shouting but I've just done a posting on my blog about Fayrouz's collection for the widow of Jill Carroll's translator who was murdered during the course of her kidnapping. He left behind a young wife a daughter aged three and a son aged 9 months. I know for a fact that several firedoglake readers responded to appeals by Siun and myself in the comments here for donations. See below for what's been raised:

Total Gross Amount: $6,683.75
Total PayPal Fees: -$218.04
Total Net Amount: $6,465.71
Total Wired Amount: $0.00
Total Wire Fees: $0.00
Total Remaining Amount: $6,465.71

If you're one of the people who gave - thank you I am very very grateful. You helped buy that young woman and her children time.

Mark

Yeah, poor Tommy boy
His career is in the toilet
He owes thousands in legal fees, he'll probably have to file for bankruptcy

Oops I'm so bloody thrilled I forgot to link to Fayrouz's posting - That's the differnce between us and them we give to people who need it. They give to their thieving cronies. i'm so happy today i could .......

"Several people are claiming that the arrest was itself illegal"

I don't think she was actually "arrested", she was ejected for violating the rules....

Police Remove Sheehan From Bush Speech

WASHINGTON - Cindy Sheehan, mother of a fallen soldier in Iraq, wasn't the only one ejected from the House gallery during the State of the Union address for wearing a T-shirt with a war-related slogan that violated the rules. The wife of a powerful Republican congressman was also asked to leave.

Beverly Young, wife of Rep. C.W. Bill Young (news, bio, voting record) of Florida — chairman of the House Defense Appropriations subcommittee — was removed from the gallery because she was wearing a T-shirt that read, "Support the Troops — Defending Our Freedom."

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060...DMzBHNlYwM3MDM-

The MSNBC poll's current results:
Do you believe President Bush's actions justify impeachment? * 215489 responses

86% - Yes, between the secret spying, the deceptions leading to war and more, there is plenty to justify putting him on trial.

4% - No, like any president, he has made a few missteps, but nothing approaching "high crimes and misdemeanors."

8% - No, the man has done absolutely nothing wrong. Impeachment would just be a political lynching.

2% - I don't know.

Looks like it's getting through to people.

Oops! My bad. She was arrested...

Capitol Police took Sheehan, invited as a guest of Rep. Lynn Woolsey (news, bio, voting record), D-Calif., away in handcuffs and charged her with unlawful conduct, a misdemeanor. She later was released on her own recognizance.

I know that this is off topic but I've been thinking about this all morning and I need to share.

I have a dream. I dream that GW will be born again in the body of a poor black man.

I know that this may be considered non PC but I really wish that he could walk his ignorant butt in the shoes of someone less fortunate than him. This is what was running through my mind during a lunchtime presentation here at work.

Today is the start of Black History Month and here at the Bureau of Economic Activity (BEA) we had the honor of the Chairman of The Council of the District of Columbia Linda Cropp kicking it off. As I sat there listening to her talk about the problems in the District and how the Council and other City Members have attacked them my respect for the Council's hard work and ingenuity to turn this city around grew tenfold. I then reminded myself not to listen to the darn papers and TV stations when they attack and misrepresent these same members.

Why do I keep falling into the bad habit of listening to the Newspapers and trusting them to report the truth? When am I going to learn to not take what they say as gospel and get off my a** and call around to see what's really going on?

This will be my New Years resolution. Double check the newspapers facts before believing a word they print.

Coz,

LMAO that political discourse in our country has been reduced to t-shirt wars in the House gallery.

May I join the pity party ?
Seriously, where is all the cash this guy has been hoovering up the last 9 years ? Kinda like our dear Jack although I think he may have a stash offshore.

of course, it just dawned on my sleepy butt, use of funds directed his way would invite scrutiny of said funds sources - just way too delish. or. . .

he actually placed himself in all this jeopardy for a few 5 star meals, a round or two @ St. Andrews, and a ride on the big aeroplane ??

Our own anon coined the phrase 'Mayberry Macchiavellians'
and I haven't seen a more apt description of this bunch anywhere.

p.s.- when I was contacting the gang of 14, I gently prodded them w/reminders of the Hammer's absence and the threat of retribution/ostrascizing for going off the reservation was greatly diminished.

As I understand it, it's not that they trash non-contributing businesses, it's a different sort of protection racket. They get the business lobbies to support a tax-cut packages even if that particular business doesn't get anything in it by threatening that if they don't support it, they won't get their tax break next year.

That's why all the "reformer" Republicans are talking endlessly about earmarks -- they go after the spending to polish their conservative credentials, and they know they'll still have goodies in tax breaks and changes to regulations to reward contributors and keep the corrupt machine going.

mark from ireland. Way cool.

This from a poster over at HuffPo:

' We need to hold our money close and choose to invest in local causes that support our local communities. We have to start locally and build power and momentum. Currently we are not able to compete with the reach, the power and the memes of korporate amerika. We must stop buying into the corporate message that tells us what and how to think and that buying more stuff means you are more affluent and more successful.

Cancel your cable subscriptions, stop buying newspapers that push the propaganda, rediscover your own thoughts and emotions and know that this reign of economic terror cannot sustain itself if we choose our investments wisely.

Eventually the cons will start eating themselves and balance will begin to restore itself.

I just hope that the world can survive this assult until that time. '

I want to see him back at work as an exterminatior. I want to see him drive up to a customers's home in a little chevy pickup with Tom's Exterminators painted on the side. I want to watch as he walks up to the front door, rings the bell and asks if he can do the annual service. I want to see him standing there with 'Tom' stenciled in red on his brown uniform shirt pocket, sweating in the hot sun, asking, "Have you noticed any bugs anywhere? Any problem areas?" I want to watch him pump up his little can of poison, hitch up his pants and wander off down the hall spraying the baseboards in the house of his first customer of the day.

OT - Redd and Jane.

I heard Jane mention that she owns firedoglake.com but doesn't how how to set it up.

If that's really the case it's very simple, just log into godaddy, choose your domain and set up domain forwarding.

I go to firedoglake.com by accident all the time, and I'm sure lots of others do too.

ask if you need help.

marclord I think it's effing wonderful. I served as a UN peacekeeper wth our army throughout a hefty chunk of the Lebanese civil war so I've some idea of what the poor woman is going through. it's not a huge amount of money even in Iraq but it does mean that she can get though the period we all go through of being distraught without being distraught about money as well. I think it says a lot about the sort of people who run this place and those who come here that some of the donations came from FDL folk.

Unfortunately, this is not what it appears to be at first glance. Delay's legal fees fundraising has not dropped. In fact in 2005, he collected more than 2004 and there are no signs that his actual money raising will slow down. The problem for him is that his legal fees outpace the actual money he's taking in. It's not good for Delay, obviously but it's not the same thing as saying he's having trouble raising cash. Unfortunately, there are plenty of slimy, rich fatcats in Texas and elsewhere who will continue to pour cash into this corrupt, greedy bastatrds fund. It will only dry up if and when it becomes obvious that his ass is fried and who knows how long that'll be.

Bush’s One Hour Argument With Himself
http://thinkprogress.org/2006/02...t-with-himself/

I live in his district. We've been contacted three times in the last week about Delay. Two polls -- both commissioned for Tom Delay -- and a phone call from a supporter.

The poll I got seemed aimed at the GOP primary, and he appears to be polling hard line stances in immigration, gay marriage, abortion, and terrorism. Tom's thinking he has to swing SUPER right to get through the primary.

My wife says the first poll was more a "judging of support" and "how far has the bad news penetrated".

Tom Delay is feeling the heat. I've lived in his district all my life, and I can recall only ONE contact before -- back when Morrison was causing him heartaches.

The Hammer is squealing -- and from what I can tell of the man, he will not go quietly. He seems the sort that likes to hold grudges.

Oh man. I haven't dug in yet, been combing through comments. There is going to be something in this. It could be right in front of our noses, too, like misuse of government property for campaign purposes.

Yeh, me too.

Cozumel - heh, yeah, i was about to link you ;)

But seriously. Glenn Greenwald (yet again) is citing court cases suggesting that the law was broken, and not by CS.

I hate to be unduly alarmist, but when they break laws in plain view of the national media and noone takes action against them... well, to paraphrase Gore, "what CAN'T they do?!"

MyDD should ask this poll question: "If President Bush declared Martial Law in order to protect the nation against terrorists, would you support him?" I'll bet the breakdown would be about 60/40. ;)

OT, where did the name Firedoglake come from?

Our own anon coined the phrase 'Mayberry Macchiavellians'

I thought it was Joe Conason.

So Poor Tom is going broke. He doesn't have the friends that ol'Scooter has.

Mel Sembler (ask the General about Mel Sembler) is personally spearheading the fund drive for Scooter. Mel owns a great deal of St. Pete. One of the jewels in his real estate crown is called BayWalk. The movie theatres there belong to Muvico. They are the second largest grossing set of movie screens in Florida. Mel has committed 100% of his profits from the BayWalk Muvico to Scooter.

Aside: BayWalk never showed Farhenheit 911. We all had to hike to Tampa for that.

Hope I linked right. Not good at these things just yet.

http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/ spti...drive+for+Libby

I won't be happy until his fund is $10 million in the red. Remember who was behind impeaching Clinton and how much they had to pay in legal fees defending themselves.

I personally would like to see him bankrupt for eternity, and sitting in jail for two eternities.

The man is a scum bag, and that might be an insult to scum.

A little clarity:

St. Pete is, of course, St. Petersburg, Florida.

My recollection is that "Mayberry Machiavlli" was coined by John DiIulio, the first director of the Office of Faith Based Initiatives.

marc

Yes i was there at that time. I duty officer when Mother T came around so never got to meet or see her. :-(

it's actually where my "web name" comes from. We, well some of my sergeants got the idea and got me to OK it and then I pitched in, anyway we used to do things like re-build dry stone walls, unblock wells and stuff like that on "off duty" days. all stuff that a bunch of bogtrotters from rural background knew how to do :-)

After a while when people wanted things done like that they'd turn up and ask for "Mark from Ireland the follower of the prophet Jesus." It really amazed them that Christians would treat them like human beings and they responded in kind. I made friends there (on all sides of the various divides) that I have to this day. When I went back to live in Beirut my son's "second mother" was ,a not fundamentalist exactly, just very very strict, Shia lady. She still thinks of him as being a son of hers her kids call me "Uncle Mark" and him "brother" and mean it to this day.

Thanks everyone on the correction to Mayberry Macchiavellians, was so dazzled by it when first seen, I never had proper attribution. It's like a cypher key in that explains so much.

mark from ireland, you're gonna make ol clare tear up again - spent lots of time in pre civil war Lebanon and found the people t/b be the most welcoming and hospitable regardless of background, and we're talking about young, single, unescorted american women. thanks for the response

You're very welcome claire - I was back there very recently they haven't changed :-) LOL the Irish pride - ourselves on being hospitable but as both you and I know the Lebanese version of hospitality knocks the Irish version into a cocked hat. I always think of Hemingway "grace under pressure."

The next issue that we need to publicize is the "America is addicted to oil" from Bush's speech. CNBC, which I watch religiously (not Dobsonesque), is obsessively talking about alternative fuels, etc. We all remember that Cheney set our oil energy policy some years ago behind closed doors (Can someone remember the link?)with the major oil companies. No one else invited. Just recently the oil executives went before Congress and escaped testifying under oath. The average voter connects Bush with oil. We had our chance to start weaning off oil some years ago, but Cheney just hid the conference debate. Delay is Texas and oil. This needs to be out in the news again via the blogs to the MSM. Remember, with oil at $68/barrel, we are financing both sides of this war, and the cost is constantly rising. The oil rise also triggers inflation which means the new Fed chief may not quit hiking rates, and the country will go into a recession when the Fed overtightens. Just more reasons for business to hate Bush. Time to revisit this talking point again.

mark from ireland the follower of the prophet Jesus, in case you see this, thank you for your acts and your perspective. Such things as these can sometimes stay the hand of fate.

Clare booth lucid (cool name) thanks for the compliment. Even an ass like me needs them on occasion.

Rayne, Thanks for the post on GOPUSA/Enron
Cannot do anything with it until tonight except i did look at a few of the e-mails. Check out 4/13/01
" Revised WH document with Cheney's office requesting document on upcoming meeting with Enron/Cheney" if i am reading it right.
7/12/01
"U.S. News reports that three Bush Administration officials--Senior Advisor Karl Rove, VP Chief of Staff I. Lewis Libby, and top economic policy advisor Lawrence Lindsey--each owned at least $50,000 in Enron stock...Rove has moved to sell his shares..."
Any insider trading going on here?
What about the Energy Task Force information that was not allowed to see the light of day by the courts. This could be real BIG.
Again, thank you for the heads-up

Poor Tom DeLay, out of the power chair, and running out of cash in his legal defense slush fund. Where are all those big cash cows lobbyists people who owe you favors friends when you need them?

I'm gonna sue him too - (is there a cause of action called "Intentional Infliction of Scowlly Blotchy Visage?" That way he'll have to keep paying lawyers to get rid of my nuisance suit - everybody pile it on - crush him under legal debt that he can't get rid of in bankruptcy. Wouldn't that be a fitting end - without Delay!

Does anyone know the law concerning legal defense funds?

Do you have to pay taxes on this money?
If not, why not?

Is the money given tax deductible? Federal? State?

Thanks,

Fran

"Brother, Can You Spare a Dime," lyrics by Yip Harburg, music by Gorney Harburg (1931)

They used to tell me I was building a dream, and so I followed the mob,
When there was earth to plow, or guns to bear, I was always there right on the job.
They used to tell me I was building a dream, with peace and glory ahead,
Why should I be standing in line, just waiting for bread?

Once I built a railroad, I made it run, made it race against time.
Once I built a railroad; now it's done. Brother, can you spare a dime?
Once I built a tower, up to the sun, brick, and rivet, and lime;
Once I built a tower, now it's done. Brother, can you spare a dime?

Once in khaki suits, gee we looked swell,
Full of that Yankee Doodly Dum,
Half a million boots went slogging through Hell,
And I was the kid with the drum!

Say, don't you remember, they called me Al; it was Al all the time.
Why don't you remember, I'm your pal? Buddy, can you spare a dime?

Once in khaki suits, gee we looked swell,
Full of that Yankee Doodly Dum,
Half a million boots went slogging through Hell,
And I was the kid with the drum!

Say, don't you remember, they called me Al; it was Al all the time.
Say, don't you remember, I'm your pal? Buddy, can you spare a dime?
