the hypocrisy (note spelling!) stinks to high heaven ...

Thanks for the Cornhole moment. I'm especially looking forward to the sanctimonious Ralph Reed getting a come-upance.

thanks *ilson. And so does my spelling ;)

It's hard work for Cornyn to maintain the well earned title of "most stupid person on the planet".

Fucker!

VG Please watch your language. We don't use the F word at *DL

Cornyn speaks of convicted felons?

Oh dear, I think I feel the vapors coming on.

Caspar Weinberger, Ollie North, John Poindexter (who worked for Bush), G. Gordon Liddy...just to name a few from the Reagan admn.

And now onto the Bush admn...

Cornyn is a wanker.

I forgot Elliot Abrams.

Sorry.

Cornyn actually wears expensive cowboy boots with the official Senate Seal embossed on the leather...

BASH: But like anything in politics, there are shades of gray. Senator John Cornyn is a Texas Republican searching for a middle ground. He says illegal immigrants should be able to work in the U.S. legally, but only if they return to their country of origin first.

(on camera): How worried are you about the deep divide within your own party over this issue?

SEN. JOHN CORNYN (R), TEXAS: I really am not worried about it. I think it's actually healthy.

BASH: You think it's healthy? In an election year it's healthy?

CORNYN: Well, you know, that's the problem in America, we're always having elections.

hey folks, I just welcomed a refugee from AmericaBlog back in the previous thread -

drop down and say howdy if you're so inclined.

I saw someone suggest to John that he give amnesty to all those he banned last night..

Freddy has some tough words for John.

OT: Will the wingnuts take back, much less apologize, for the things they said or implied about Jill Carroll?

Will Howie Kurtz have any remorse for giving them the grist to say or imply these things?

Will my cat ever learn to flush the toilet?

CORNYN: Well, you know, that's the problem in America, we're always having elections.

That's the funniest thing I've seen all day!

Mostly I like blog controversies to stay within the blog that spawned them, but I have to admit, John really lost it last night.

Aassure him that on this blog he won't be accidentally picking up bad ideas from one of those terrible Jane Hansher of the Left types. We've been inspected.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/ wp...6033101584.html

This, which appeared on the op ed page of the Washington Post today, is well worth reading. Entitled "Stalinism Forever", it is a frightening look at what's happening in Russia under Putin - the familiar stories we of the baby boom remember hearing as children about the Soviet Union - the arrests, imprisonment, tortured confessions of those opposed to the regime. Now under Putin, it's being done again in the name of the "war on terror". Except that this time, one can imagine it happening here in the United States, under the "unified executive theory" of government. Why, oh why, does Feingold have to be so alone?

The WP's take:

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.) did not stick around for questions and answers but dismissed Dean as someone who is trying to sell books and "is a convicted felon."

Dean may have the last word, however. "The book I am going to be publishing soon that mentions the senator from Texas will not be out until this summer," Dean told the committee. Later, someone asked about the book's title. "Conservatives Without Conscience," Dean said with a smile.

Chas. Babington writes one great kicker. And nary a Rovian TP in sight.
This is the WP? Oh, but wait, they snarked it up because they don't take censure at all seriously...

gay politics in Indiana tended to be way too white (by default) but when it was the Black Caucus in the Legislature that lead the anti-gay-marriage fight (still underway) and the Black Democrats on the CityCouncil in Indianapolis provided the votes to pass a human-rights LGBT-friendly ordnance, gay Hoosier politicos realized the vital role of African-Americans.
Aravosis needs to be aware of the critical supportive role of the Black Caucus in Congress. His remarks about Ms. McKinney are poisonous. Frankly, it's unlike him ... he needs to apologize and get a Black BF !

guys, I think both Weinberger and Abrams were only indicted not convicted, BUSH41 took care of that.

but I digress, I remind you all that as a gesture signifying my fealty to this community - I went to this Enemy of the State's office twice - I knew nothing would change but I felt if so many of you were willing to take time to visit your Reps., I had to too. My domestic partner insisted I call him at very specific times as a way of knowing I was not arrested.

I don't know what I enjoyed more, the request for my press credentials, or my now traditional sign off of
Oh, btw, Abramoff, Abramoff, Abramoff !

I disagree completely with this comment:

"It's hard work for Cornyn to maintain the well earned title of "most stupid person on the planet".
chris/tx | 04.01.06 - 5:24 pm | # "

No, Cornyn isn't the most stupid and in my book--only comes in 3rd place.

1st - George W. Bush! Saw a bumper sticker recently that said it all "Bush is listening, use the big words!"

2nd - Douglas Feith! We have him to blame for the OSP and all that careful planning of the Post War. Tommy Franks on the other hand did call him something to the effect of the fucking stupidest person on earth.

Next, we have Corny and say what you will about him, he comes in 3rd. Closely trailing are all the right wing bloviators like Rush Windbag, Bill O'Liely and the 55 Million idiots who voted for Bush.

"don't forget about Poland!"

a W classic.....

I have also fled ablog

I'm so glad you brought this to the front page, Jane. someone pointed it out the day of the hearings and it is such a good point. I'm excited about Rudy's bendover and I am feeling a little "hubris" about the likelihood of some testimony about DeLay, that naughty boy.

Also, is it my computer or some new haloscan thing that my cursor blinks like crazy while I write? it's a little like the 60's if you get my drift...

gee, and this morning I called Cornyn a pimp - looks like I had him on the wrong side of the transactions...(and no, not as a 'john').

So what we’ve seen exposed over the last couple of years, especially over the last year, are dozens (I dunno, maybe hundreds!) of examples of obviously criminal corruption. ALL of it GOP corruption. I’ve been shocked and quite pleased by the fact that it’s been pretty much only Republicans that have been caught with their hands in the cookie jar, and then quoted bold-faced lying about it. Crime after crime, lie after lie.

Yet:
The press doesn’t cover the corruption more than the occasional mention, usually with a nice un-challenged denial wrapped into the “fair” article.

The Democratic national party organization focuses on running scared before the opinion polls. Don’t want to make too much noise, be too nasty, or the polls might go back up… It’s like we’re just not sure why things are going our way and we’re going to keep our collective mouths shut right through to the midterms so we don’t upset anyone, anywhere, and reverse the flow.

Out here in the Nets we yell and scream and use the F-word till we turn away in frustration and go get the work done we’ve put off to type on these-here blogs.

I’m fed up. I’m in a nice, safe district with the wonderful Louis Capps as my congresswoman., so I’m going to support her and the Democratic candidates in the neighboring two districts, who’ve got a lot harder challenge in front of them.

What I want to see is a NATIONAL coordination effort to get a concise and effective message before the nation. Something that says it like it is: these people are lying, cheating, stealing, bigoted assholes and we Democrats are going to call them out and kick their stinking asses. Marketing: what a concept.

I guess maybe we’ve got to do it; maybe we’re the spine. I sure hear that rumbling message lately here and at Kos. I’m encouraged by the efforts FDL has coordinated to send simple messages to DC: rubber stamps, faxes, and the like.

I’m starting to ramble so I’ll shut up and go collect my tax paperwork and watch UCLA and LSU. But THANKS to all of you--Jane and Christy and now Pach and Taylor--and all of you brilliant and funny commenters. It keeps me hopeful.

President's wartime authority to remain in office past 2008

I DON'T KNOW WHY YOU THINK THIS IS A JOKE.

This could be for real.

Here is where you need to at least -consider- 911 as being an inside job. If it is, they can do it again. I don't ask you to be a true believer, only to speculate what the nation would look like *IF* it were true. Orwell.

Cornyn's comments didn't even make sense logically. He said that nobody was calling for the program to stop, but that the idea that anybody would want to stop was adding to the "surreal atmosphere."

The guy's dumber than a boot full of hammers.

oh senator cornhole, the tempting of fate. my first thought yesterday was, you f'in pussy. my second thought was, boy i wonder if he has some skeletons, being from texas and all. i believe i will pay attention as this story develops.

ps - no mentions of McLellan leaving and only mentions of Snow out are the stories from 3/30 that Bolton wants him out.

Ah, Jane. It's unbecoming for a woman of a certain age -- not that you don't look great! -- to be obsessed with a vastly younger man. And I don't mean Senator Cornyn!

On which, enjoy. And best of luck getting DC media to latch on to your idee fixe: you appear to have confused "minority" with "ignorant."

....

Anon:

No, Cornyn IS the stupidest person on earth. Seriously. You don't have him for a Congressperson. I do. He thinks Bush is smart. Bush doesn't think he's smart. He kinda has a clue that he's a few fries short of a happy meal. Cornyn is too stupid to know how stupid he is, and to think a proudly ignorant person is smart. QED.

Very scary article on ICH re attack on Iran ...

http:// www.informationclearingho...rticle12593.htm

not sure of reliabilty but worth a read

Cornyn has a problem with felonies?

Think anyone has bothered to actually show him the FISAand Color of Law Statutes?

Makes me wish I could do graphics stuff - FISA & THE COLOR OF LAW COLORING BOOK: Senate Judiciary Committee Edition

What a shame that Dean didn't walk over and punch Cornyn smack in his smug kisser. What else can you expect from a Texas Republican but more of the same afflictions feckless leader hits us with. How big of Cornyn to slime Dean and then walk out. It was disgraceful but there is very little Republican grace in the Senate. The hearing showed what vipers Bush's partners in crime are.

Cornyn thinks Bush is smart....maybe he can translate this Bush quote for us:

The other big opportunity for democracy, of course, is China. President Hu Jintao is coming to our country, as you know. I will continue to remind him ours is a complex relationship and that we would hope that he would not fear a free society, just like it doesn't appear that he's fearing a free market. I happen to believe free markets eventually yield free societies. One of the most -- one of the most pure forms of democracy is the marketplace, where demand causes something to happen. Excess demand causes prices to -- the supply causes prices to go up, and vice versa. That stands in contrast to governments that felt like they could set price and control demand.--George W. Bush

My guess is that the Corndog will soon be political toast, if there's justice in the world. No amnesty for baked goods!

Yowser!

As for Cornyn and his phoney Texass Cronies:

So what is it about Texas that makes it incapable of honesty and justice and yet continues to puff up it's Biggest Chest in the West and strut around the national stage like the Cock of the Walk.

Is the particular form of ego-maniacal bravado and posturing we see constantly oozing out of Texas the result of inbreeding?

Has the Texas' dream of being it's own Country, almost since it's forced illegitimate creation in the 19th century, perverted the culture down there to the point of Texans feeling themselves Superior to the United States itself?

Profound, pathological 'inferiority complexes' like those projected by Texas on to the national media arena seem like poorly written jingoistic infomercials for a "Ass Clowns Are Us".

Texass politics reeks of a stink that would gag a magot. The Lone Star State has suceeded in creating a far, far superior form of Tammey Hall style corruption and putrid self interest than I ever thought possible in the 21st century.

No wonder Enron thrived there like a Bad Seed, the whole climate and Kulture of Texas is an Incubator of Evil.

I mock the present day Lone Star Staters that the Texas justice of Legend they brag about would have had Ken Lay and his thieves swinging from the nearest lamp post, not enjoying a leisurely stroll in the park.

Texas really is the Best at Producing the Worst.

Looks like the war is getting worse:
"But with each political milestone — the transfer of sovereignty in 2004, two sets of elections in 2005, the referendum on the constitution — the Americans have asserted that the country would stabilize. Instead, the violence has continued unabated, sometimes changing in nature, as it is doing now, but never declining. And as the resulting migration continues, Iraq's political groups could have even less incentive to compromise with one another, as they separate into their enclaves."

"American officials say the solution to the sectarian bloodshed lies in the Iraqis' quickly forming a national unity government, with representatives of all major groups in Iraq checking each other through compromises.

But with each political milestone — the transfer of sovereignty in 2004, two sets of elections in 2005, the referendum on the constitution — the Americans have asserted that the country would stabilize. And Republicans are advising Bush to extend the talks about Iraq as well as help fund-raising to ensure a GOP victory in November. Wonder how that'll work for them.

John Dean is more of a good human being than Cornyn will ever be. What a cowardly and pathetic moment. The day will come when members of this administration will be the convicted felons. I harbor no illusions that they will be repentent. It was good news to hear that Mr. Dean is writing another book. He's a very decent, patriotic, and fair-minded American. This country needs more like him.

Texass politics reeks of a stink that would gag a magot.

Gentleman Jim i couldn't disagree more. that stink is the stink that would knock a vulture off a shit wagon. otherwise i agree.

I am so sick to my stomach. Over and over and over and over...

I'm very happy you want to keep the topic of Ben's (and Red State's) racism alive, Trevino. I am all for it.

Atrios is right. There has not been nearly enough focus on what a bunch of bigots the right-wing blogs are. I think we should explore this much, much more fully.

Gimme a couple of hours, we'll have something for you.

Enjoy.

(oh and thanks for calling "minorities" "ignorant." That's a keeper.)

Yet another phony war based on lies: Iran and the totally imaginary bioweapons threat.

We are on the edge of starting WWIII because of propoganda that Iran is creating a bioweapon that makes avian flu jump to humans. This is completely bogus.

If the US government was truly trying to fight avian flu, they wouldnt be prohibiting the publication of any more than 20% of the genome.

In a real public health emergency, wouldnt we be sharing all knowledge with the nations of the world? Why the required secrecy?

Remember Libby's aspens letter to Miller, she was to write on Iran's nuclear 'threat' and also 'bioweapons.'

The hour is late. Anyone reading this who can speak up MUST speak up NOW.

Attacking Iran May Trigger Terrorism
U.S. Experts Wary of Military Action Over Nuclear Program

By Dana Priest
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, April 2, 2006; Page A01

As tensions increase between the United States and Iran, U.S. intelligence and terrorism experts say they believe Iran would respond to U.S. military strikes on its nuclear sites by deploying its intelligence operatives and Hezbollah teams to carry out terrorist attacks worldwide.

Iran would mount attacks against U.S. targets inside Iraq, where Iranian intelligence agents are already plentiful, predicted these experts. There is also a growing consensus that Iran's agents would target civilians in the United States, Europe and elsewhere, they said.

There continue to be demonstrations against the efforts to crack down on immigrants from Mexico. I think there's an opportunity to link that issue with the broader issue of the Republican's support for Bush lawlessness. The Repubs keep hinting those crossing into the US are potential terrorists -- so that means they too could be subject to all of the illegal means Bush has authorized wrt to suspected "terrorists" or supporters. Think Padilla. Loss of rights, no access to attorneys, detention without end, no access to courts or habeas corpus, etc., and illegial wiretapping of Latino communities to find them. If Bush can ignore FISA using his arguments, he can ignore any procedural protections that exist wrt to anyone who comes in across the US-Mexican border. And it doesn't matter whether you have a valid ID card or not.
Isn't there a potential political coalition here, with a group of people who are willing to go to the streets to protect basic human rights?

What did Kohl do to get credit in this post? He's my Senator, and since I didn't get the chance to watch the whole hearing, I must have missed his part.

I find it so hilarious that Trevino feels Ok about posting here.

The right wing blogs are all about control and censorship and fixing the discourse. They have internalized the entertainment styles of Limbaugh and mistake it for discourse.

But still, JT has no problem posting here because this is an open place, where ignorant speech is countered with intelligent speech.

-- Reason -- rather than the boot and glove covered fist which is what Trevino squats behind.

These guys (and yes it is a gender thing) are irony proof.

Noonan - he missed his part too!

U.S. troops will be garrisoned in "Gated Communities" throughout Iraq as they sit by and do nothing while the whole country plunges into civil war and burns to the ground.

There wouldn't be any accusations of 'Nation Building' with our troops. Hell, NOLA won't be done for decades, if ever, forget rebuilding Anything in the Middle East, America only knows how to destroy.

The looting after our 'victory' was a warm up act, a proof of concept, for allowing the different factions to kill each other off.

We and our troops will be there, not even to sweep up the pieces, but to assure that even a country that outbids us for the price of oil, since we're broke, won't get the oil.

The US will assure itself of oil, even if we don't have the money to pay for it.

Add the trade deficits, to the budget deficits, and the unfunded pension plans, and the US won't be able to afford a pot to piss in 10-20 years from now. Seizing the oil fields now might keep the lights on for a bit longer, at least for the 'Elite' classes of the U.S.

The 21st Century motto for the NeoConJobs:

Justice for Just Us.

actually, it's quite a compliment to Jane that Trevino feels he needs to defend his XeroxBuddy Ben from the likes of her. You go, girl!

To be fair (and balanced), I've seen several righty sites tolerate lefty commenters, e.g. John Cole's recent dustup with the Hamshernator.

"FISA & THE COLOR OF LAW COLORING BOOK: Senate Judiciary Committee Edition"

All expenses paid to Yearly Kos in Las Vegas? Or not.

Jane, if you'd like to feature a model for combating racism, I humbly suggest a little history on a guy named Stetson Kennedy who almost single handedly, exposed the Klan and it's 'secret code word' antics to national ridicule.

Stetson Kennedy was an amazingly creative force for ingenius ways to best the bigots among us.

Google the guy, he had a real grasp on the power of media in his day to effect change.

op99 -- that's a bit bigger than I think we can handle right now. I'm thinking more books & DVDs.

Nice try, though :)

Trevino thinks we are his enemy,

but in fact, he is pretty much a null set -- and occasionally at best (like now) a distracting small thing.

Small in spirit, mind and ideas.

Speaking for myself, he doesn't rate recognition, Jane, except as a sad sort of zoo creature. I bet he just posted here to get hits on his dying site.

"tacitus" --

ummm ... VHS copies of NBK ?

I'm probably way late on this, but I just watched the GOP ad at C & L.

I thought Cheney was the worst shot, but whoever cooked this clip must have a very very sore foot.

DANG Feingold looks and sounds good in it - Reid sounds pretty good, so does Durbin. And after seeing a bit of the censure hearings - I have never seen/heard Graham so mis-speaky off his game.

Stand with Bush? Uh, isn't it the GOPers who keep ducking out of their photo ops with him?

Book of stamps, then?

Jane, howbouta copy of "Eyes on the Prize?"

book of 37 cent stamps?

"The AG will state that the law is clear, talk about how much he wants to avoid repetition of El Paso and pledge to take swift action to enforce the law," Reed wrote. "He will also personally hand Ed Young a letter that commits him to take action in Livingston."

Maybe Reed is just psychic. Or maybe God told him what Cornyn was going to do?

This seems to be a busy night on FDL.

To newcomers who are here for the incredible intelligent discussion, or the ideas for creative ways to make our country and our world better--Welcome!

This is a community. We keep our disagreements civil. We are kind and courteous to each other, and to the awesome Redd and Jane.

i was inspired by your book of stamps comment but 37 cent stamp books aren't quite so useful as they used to be ...

Jane, re: prizes, how about some lovely firedoglake merchandise. A shirt, a bag or a box would all be very nice. I love my canvas bags with the long handles, also my fabulous sweatshirt, high quality very warm. I would love to win more merch...fwiw

Another good one would be a copy of Crashing the Gate, or the Kos cookbook. A prepaid copy of Glenn's book?

Or I could send a couple lobsters and some steamers to somebody...clambake time, provide your own corn and case of beer!

After reading about Tony Rudy flipping on his buddies yesterday, it gives me hope that more will be brought down, like Cornyn. Reed, DeLay, Buckham, and many others are due a good karmic bitchslapping.

I'm thinking more books & DVDs.

How about the chance to do a post. The winner could email it to you, Pach or ReddHedd and you could post it for them.
Or,
the winner could request that you write a snarky post on a certain topic or person.
Mary was talking about a "value matrix" last night. Maybe instead of having "one prize," have the winner choose one prize from several categories, a book, a gift certificate, something from the FDL apparel store.... The more choices, the better for everyone. They might ask you to roast, I mean snark someone you don't want to snark. These are all just brainstorming, I'm not tied to any of them.

Brokeback Mountain is coming out [sic] on DVD on Tuesday...

FDL t-shirts, natch!

We really could use more copies of Crashing the Gate -- we need every progressive to read it.

A little history, a copyy of "the War Room". A george Bush bobblehead doll? (wearing a FDL T-shirt?) A Feingold 08 bumpersticker? An autographed photo of Jane and Christy? An autographed copy of your book?

John C.

I read last night's comments this morning -- so you are going in for a little banning conflict posting now, huh?

I knew that kind, thoughtful, smart, courteous stuff was just an act! :~)

zenn -- heh, was typing FDL shirts and CTG just as you posted your suggestion. Can't have enough of either of those in circulation!

John Casper -- I like that idea. It's going to be a multi-prize deal so maybe we have 5 different prizes, people can choose.

1 - FDL cup, mousepad or notebook
2 - Copy of "Crashing the Gate"
3 - Chance to do your own post
4 - Free FDL Las Vegas Breakfast
5 - ?

Jane, did I miss the specifics of the new contest? Sorry, I've been otherwise engaged. Prize should be in keeping with subject matter, FWIW. Dinner for two at "Under the Table", formerly known as "Signatures" perhaps? Of course, not appropriate unless the subject is graft and corruption.

Prize: one-way ticket to Abu Gharib. Runner-up: one-way ticket to Baghdad, w inadequate body armor.

tacitus:

I do not labor under the fantasy that those presently convinced of Domenech's enduring racism will be swayed by this mere recounting of facts. They are a hateful crowd, spurred on by an embittered loathing and paranoia that Domenech inflamed, but did not create. But I am hopeful that people not yet convinced either way might consider the man's public record with more honesty than his enemies bring to the square. It is enough that he is revealed as a plagiarist: there is ruination and humiliation in that, and for it, as Mike Krempasky noted, he will "wander in the wilderness as he rightly should." But plagiarism is not a crime of hate; it is not a black mark on the soul; and it is not, one suspects, foremost among the crimes for which God will demand an accounting on the last day. And so, against the accusation of that sort of crime -- against the accusation of racism -- I, a friend of the fallen, cannot remain silent.

Peril, I laugh at you. For I shall defend Ben Domenech whatever the cost, whatever the sacrifice. If I must stand atop the Empire State building, a mere 3 miles from where the jihadists last spoke, I will. If I must play Ghost Recon 2 for 20 straight hours, I will. For I, determined to redeem this great republic… ok, I can’t do it any more. Is this satire? Trevino’s Gettysburg address? And is he begging Jane for a smackdown? S & M freak.

How about a copy of crashing the gate? Are you sure it is really him and not the troll?

I agree with immanentize.... trevino is desperate for attention. Don't give it to him.... we have better things to do with our time....

*ilson, an homage, I'm so flattered. It's usually me being inspired by you. You've really come alive since you dropped the letter that dare not speak its name 'round heah.
Your fan,

Re. Tacitus, Joyce is quite appropriate here:

as Taciturn pretells, our wrongstory-

A 'strake' is a strike on an AH.

Prize- A subscription to WaPo? Ah... never mind... minority appeal...for those who need bird cage liners...

modern racism like the GOP & Ben espouse is not one of overt hate but callous indifference and ignorance to the realities Blacks and Latinos face daily.

Awe don't worry Paul, we've been planning it all day anyway (see earlier threads), inspired by Atrios' comments this morning.

Let Trevino think he inspired it. Maybe he'll stop being Mr. Limpy for a minute.

Thanks.
"You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time."
OT, IIRC, some of your most recent article was about rape. If you have any reflection on the Duke LaCrosse team, I am interested. It appears the administration kept it under wraps until the men's basketball team lost in the NCAA. Aside from the three who raped (ok innocent until proven guilty) her, the other 44 guys on the team wouldn't tell Police what happened, and they were all there. I think this could turn into a metaphor for the SD rapist rights law, just like DeadEye did for the Administration. If this woman lived in SD, she might have to carry a child to term.

cbl | 04.01.06 - 7:01 pm

My point is that the political kulture in Texas is producing political monsters that are effecting the rest of the country in a way that few other states have suceeded in doing. Every state has some wack jobs, Texas produces them on an assembly line, and seems to crow and bragg about it, like they are the biggest and best at Everything.

Name another state that can trump Texas in pure abusive power political terms. Florida? Pure Bush League.

Time to put your dick back in your pants, JT.

Trevino you're out of here. You wouldn't allow someone insulting you -- let alone other commenters -- on Red State. You've crossed the line. Now get the fuck out.

John Casper - 7:14

How about a chance to co-post for those of us who are still trying to learn how to do all this blog and political stuff. I know I would just love to learn how Jane and Redd and Pach go about each post, choosing pictures, etc.

A behind the scenes kind of bonus in addition to the honor of choosing a topic for a post here.

OT, but I can't help but think "Jeez, why can't we get massive crowds like this to take to the streets, howling for the imprisonment of Bush, Cheney, Rove, Libby, Rice, and Hadley?

I vote for zen's suggestion: An autographed photo of Jane and Christy!

hehe... I was FDL fan at 7:28, but I chose a random name bec. I thought Jane would ban me for being so rude.

"Yes, do insulate Jane from receiving as she give"
No, we know it's less humiliating if we do it, than if Jane does it. It's purely out of concern for people like you.
Speaking of which, what you think about the South Dakota Rapist's rights law. Did you read about what the Duke LaCrosse team did?

John,

I haven't thought too much about it (too self-focussed recently) but I think you are exactly right! There is nothing to drive a point home like a sports metaphore. I think it's perfect....

I'm gonna think more about it tomorrow -- get some more details, talk to someone who represents victims in these situations. Let's continue to think this through -- maybe more Monday?

Senator Cornholio (I need Constitution for my bunghole!) should ask Orrin Hatch and Jeff Sessions about 'Jesus gave me a do-over" Charles Colson and then talk about felons.

One thing the Watergate crowd could teach this generation of crooks - "Don't do the crime if you can't do the time".

Suzanne | Homepage | 04.01.06 - 7:28 pm
That's actually a much better idea, I think. The chance to submit a draft to FDL and then let them decide how much actually makes it into the post, is a lot less threatening.

Oh christ, what an unhip bore this Josh troll is. Indeed he does not understand what a Hamsher STRAKE is! Yes "strake' is the correct word so his unenlightened and misguided use of 'sic' is hilarious. Do they ever read anything besides their verbal blowjobs to each other?

LMAO!

Mary | 04.01.06 - 7:08 pm | #

They played the ad?!!!

Mwahaha!!!

LOL!

Or, "cheese" I can't remember.

LOL.

I haven't a clue what's going on except that some guy named Trevino is trolling. But on the stands alone front, I specifically remember that it IS the cheese that stands alone.

On the Trevino front, I specifically remember plaid sansabelt slacks.

Obviously, the cheese stands alone for a good reason.

immanentize, no problem, whenever you get time, IF you get time.

god dammit i was just refreshing. fuck. sorry.

S'okay, pukebot. It was good the second time around too ;)

oops, maybe I just did something wrong... Jane?

Did you read about what the Duke LaCrosse team did?
John Casper | 04.01.06 - 7:31 pm | #

Not so fast with that, John. There haven't even been any arrests, yet. Not that I like "Dooke" or anything, I don't ; )

all i have to do is fuck up and i get a tag from jane? incompetence rules!! (literally)

anagram for josh trevino:

hero joins tv.

the anagram never lies. coming to a roundtable near you.

Jane, I could always use another coffee cup, and an FDL one would be great.

Or...has Russ Feingold ever written a book?

Jeralyn at Talkleft is also hesitant about the rape charges BUT what irks me is the "code of silence" the men have assumed. There is a coverup going on - no question whatsoever : we just dont know the details yet and the entire damn team ain't talking!
and besides: doesn't 'lacrosse' sound kinda Frenchified to be a real sport?

Right now an FDL sweatshirt sounds like a great prize. Hell, any FDL stuff would be nice, but I'm still cold so I'm thinking sweatshirt!

I was outside in the rain today and haven't quite warmed up yet.

Naw, VG, there are no mistakes in TP.

yup, the use of 'sic' is hilarious; and dontcha think that if you are going to name yourself after a great orator you should be more careful with language? "On which" ? ...I foolishly dropped in on his blog...he sure can mangle a phrase.

this would be a strangely cool prize

I like Cornyn going to the "surreal atmosphere" card.

I wonder how surreal it'll be when Abramhoff hands his sorry Texas Senator ass over to federal prosecutors.

You want surreal, Senator? Take a look at Ralph Reeds pious little pus.

Thanks, Jane. I don't know how you do it.

And, this was me, being shy: "Time to put your dick back in your pants, JT."

Mary! I was having the same golfish flashbacks! phew!

Gentleman Jim | 04.01.06 - 7:27 pm | #

Oh GJ, I got your point and I should have just let it go . No one is more aware of the assembly line than we Texans, but not many of us are crowing about it.

Our fabled tribalism (an anthropologist's wet dream down here) got my hackles up and I should've just STFU, it's not the first time and it wont be the last.

Thanks for your response

I have been out for a while. Prize? Prize for what? I want in!

FYI, it's worth noting that G. Gordon Liddy was on Faux News this evening on the show Heartland. Guess what he was doing?

He was pushing HIS NEW BOOK!!! You can't script it any better....

the trolls roll in, the trolls roll out, mendacity dropping from their snout...

"and besides: doesn't 'lacrosse' sound kinda Frenchified to be a real sport?"

No, no!

It's Canadian - based on an Aboriginal game - and one tough sport.

MsAnnaNOLA - I only saw it on Crooks and Liars site. I am just SO HOPING they put it in wide circulation. Censure or Impeach? -- It's great when THEY are the guys asking. *g*

On the trollthing - I have to say, I tend to agree with him on the getting one who can read front - knowing the status of our President and impending world portents are given to him every day in the form of a pdb ---

The reading thing - it would be such an improvement. My Pet Goat is an effort, but I think the CIA and NSA have long since run out of analogies they can create for military decisions and daisy eating.

Mr. President, there are baaaaaaaaaad men there, and they, well, it's like if someone wanted to take you pet goat. How would you feel about that Mr. President? Pretty baaaaaaaaad? But, if you baaaaaaaaaaaaaaamb them first, see how that works? You goat can go on eating his daisies and you won't feel baaaaaaaaaaaad. See? Is that not getting through? Hmmmm.

Well, it's like, remember when we spent some time reading about Spot? Remember Spot? You could See Spot Run, couldn't you? Well, we can't do that Mr. President - Run like Spot. See?

The life of a Presidential briefer is not an easy one. All the time spent being indoctrinated with Mr. Rogers Neighborhood tapes - only a rare few survive.

Ya know watching that fat tick Tim Russert spin desperately for the administration and for his own reputation was just pathetic. He was so happy to repeat Rush Limbaugh talking points to Franken.

2000+ kids dead Tim. But go ahead spin, spin, spin.

Canadian! I knew it! FRENCHIFIED ! ! !

*ilson46201 | Homepage | 04.01.06 - 7:45 pm

If you've ever been on the losing side in a particularly 'spirited' lacrosse game, the first connotation of the game isn't french, it's latin, you will feel Crucified, not Frenchified

Cozumel | Homepage | 04.01.06 - 7:40 pm |
Not for rape, but about a third of the team has already been arrested for various alcohol related offenses. These boys have a reputation and no one at Duke is surprised.
I think a lot of the parents are going to want to know why they are paying $45,000 in tuition for their sons to hire strippers. Nobody at Duke is saying that didn't happen.
The other 43 players didn't join in, but at least up to this point, no one has said they tried to stop it either. Worse, there appears to have been a whole lot of dodging of the police. Sounds to me as though it was pretty bad and the boys know it.
Institutionally, the school was beyond negligent. At this point, the news reports suggest that they wanted to suppress the story until the Duke Men's team had lost in the NCAA tournament. This is Duke University, home to IIRC, the finest Medical School and Law School in North Carolina. Please someone correct me if I am wrong about that. ESPN has been providing some pretty good coverage. Given that the victim was an African American, that's surprising to me. I pay a subscriber fee to ESPN, but they completely ignored MLK's holiday, never even mentioned on a site, who is pretty much absorbed by teams dominated by African Americans.

Sweet. Gotta get busy. btw GREAT post Jane.

This just in.

First daughters Jenna and Barbara Bush will be assigned to a high-tech unit in Iraq, the Air Force Human Resources Command has confirmed. Having finished basic training at the Officer Training School (OTS) at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama, they are scheduled to receive advanced training in telecommunications at the School of Information Technology before deployment overseas with the USAF Information Operations Squadron. For security reasons, the exact dates have been withheld.

The girls' surprise enlistment was kept secret until they successfully completed their basic training. During an invitation-only press conference while on leave between OTS and their school assignment - conducted, symbolically, at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware where America's war dead are brought - the twins described their motives and rationale.

WHAM!

...And some parting gifts...

;>)

i am funning about lacrosse. i am sure its enjoyable. i know its derived from Native Americans but it is a tad (shall we say) unusual. Hoosiers play basketball, baseball and football in high school ... lacrosse teams are rather rare.

Do you have any other examples besides John Cole? I just haven't seen "several righty sites" tolerate dissent. But I admit I don't spend much time looking for them....
immanentize | 04.01.06 - 7:12 pm | #
I thought I remembered some from the redstate during the denouement of l'affaire de l'enfant Ben, but now I can't find them, so change "several" to "one", lol.

*ilson46201 | Homepage | 04.01.06 - 7:45 pm
Great comment as per usual. I don't know much about LaCrosse, so I invite other opinions, but it is a "collision"sport. These boys like to hit.
One of the Duke faculty, an old LaCrosse player himself was pissed, because their coach pulled them out of his class for "practice," because they had a bad game. This is for a non-revenue sport.
As you pointed out, the "code of silence" thing is the story right now.

Hmm. Wine. dixie cups. I knew there was something missing from my evening.

Pachacutec | 04.01.06 - 7:55 pm

I've alway prefered box wine in plastic champagne cups, dixie cups are for when the in-laws visit.

an all-white sports team (except for one African-American) in a major University indicates some racially segregating factors are at work too...

Thanks for checking! It would be very interesting to survey and publish info. about what the various blogs do -- comments, emails, open format, moderated, banning, registration, etc.

It is my imperfect perception that most all of the open discussion -- and hence security in one's ideas -- is on the "left."

_

BTW -
TheOtherWA - I'm wondering on the Tony Rudy front too.

Safavian is scheduled for trial very soon now - is it the 8th? Is he really going to jump in the deep end or deal?

Buckham seems primed, and while Delay's lawyer keeps saying he is not a target, no one seems to be asking if Christine has received a letter? Umm, how much did Buckham's strategerizing crew pay her? Reed us still walking and running, which has me wondering some.

Norquist would seem tied on the charit. orgs front pretty tight too.

Cornyn may stay out of the parade, but you have to think he might be getting some of those special invites to come have a talk.

I do feel like I may have to remind him that the only reason Dean is a convicted felon, and Gonzales is wandering around off a leash is --- Republican Congress.

bad stereotype but I associate LaCrosse with rather macho intensive participants in american varsity circles ... @ 20 years ago in New Haven, we had a major gang rape case that involved several members of a local lacrosse team - all very privileged, all very entitled. A number of us attended all the arraignment hearings, etc just to make it clear that the victim had support - she had to leave school because of the lack of support from her fellow students - it was a dreadful situation.

Lacrosse players are HOT.

Duke has the finest law school in North Carolina?

No. That would be down the road in Chapel Hill.

Mrs. Tom Delay got $3K/month for 3 years to ascertain the favorite charity of Congresscritters ... nice work if you can get it !

Hey, Bobby, thanx for the note.

Have a great time, good music tonight?

Lacrosse is like hockey on foot.

Not as bad a soccer, though.
_

Pach: and JaiLai players are caliente?

What's so stupid about Cornyn's statement is that I didn't know Dean had another book coming out, and I certainly didn't know Cornyn was in it, and I really didn't know the title of the book. So, who really helped with the marketing, Senator?

Re: Duke again....

Susan Estrich (when she is a scholar and not a talking head) likes to say that women teday should be as free to say "yes' as "No." But 46 drinking white guys with two black dancers is not exactly a scene made for consensual sex.

And, contrary to the great rape fear myth -- almost no one ever makes a false claim of rape -- especially in a stranger situation. I know this is not quite a stranger rape situation, but not really acquaintance rape either. Once you claim that you were raped, the police start all sorts of very nasty intrusive processes -- physically and mentally. False accusations are rare, regardless of criminal case outcomes.

Loathe as I am to poo in a well-crapped sink, I thought a few points might be in order:

(1) Josh voluntarily left RedState months ago. We think it's because he uncovered the hidden files about slaughtering the minorities, rounding up the atheists for internment in Christian reeducation camps, and using fertile women as human factories; but because his Rovian brain-leash chip is broken, we can't track him down to find out.

Given your inability to read what he's clearly said here, though, I expect that you'll still associate him with RedState in the future.

(2) "Hypocrisy."

(3) I have no idea why your febrile little minds would set out to prove that right wing blogs are racist; you already know this in the same way that you know Gore won, that Diebold tossed Ohio to Bush, and that the satellite Cheney uses to cause tsunamis can alter your brain waves through certain kinds of fillings and/or Halliburton briefcases, But, as long as you folks are wasting your time on this nonsense instead of doing any damage to the country as a whole, knock yourselves out.

(4) Jane, Ben Domenech is a friend of mine, so though it's unchivalric to say: He's taken, and you ain't his type. Snuff the candles and incense around the shrine and move on.

By the way: This is a drive-by. I won't be around again.

I've never known any jai alai players. . .

But lacrosse. . .

*ilson46201,

"Modern racism like the GOP and Ben espouse, is not one of overt hate but callous indifference and ignorance..."

Bless yer heart, you are far too charitable and, I think, very well meaning but racism in all its faces is grotesque and malignant. In fact, the "ignorance" and "indifference" of today's GOP and Ben Domeneches are more dangerous because they are voluntary and calculated. And yes, the indifference and ignorance cover real hate.

My children have been raised to recognize and respond to racism in every form in which it appears and they have been taught that there is a special spot in hell for the racists of privilege and advantaged circumstance.

"Zero tolerance for racism of any kind" ... at least in this rapidly changing and ever more complicated world, this is simple.

KEEP THE FAITH AND YER SHIT DETECTOR HANDY!!!

I haven't checked my gmail, sorry. I missed it. Will look now.

Mary, Safavian doesn't go to trial until May 22. He's had a couple of hearings arguing about evidence and seems to be fighting this as much as he can.

It's the quiet ones that make me really curious. Buckham for one. Methinks the DOJ may be having long talks with Mr. Buckham, similar to the ones they must have had with Rudy. There's too much known about Buckham's dealings for them to ignore him, IMHO.

troll patrol and toilet paper accomplish the same ends...

Isn't TP toilet paper? I feel like I am missing a lot on this thread.

I never knew all that stuff Doubting came to tell us. I do know, though, that when this fails:
the satellite Cheney uses to cause tsunamis can alter your brain waves through certain kinds of fillings and/or Halliburton briefcases he just uses and Italian-made Perazzi and shoots you in the face.

And that he, himself, has certain kinds of fillings, thereby rendering himself senseless and no longer responsible for comments about aluminum tubes and death throes. I definitely agree he is incapacitated. Good for your Doubtin - it takes a special kind to defend Dick Cheney.

But I think we need a ruling from John Casper on "chivalric."

I have special dispensation to use contrivations, but I'm pretty sure as a newbie you'll be required to stick with chivalrous, textually, if not tactically.

strake:
In aviation, a strake is an aerodynamic surface generally mounted on the fuselage of an aircraft to fine-tune the airflow. Aircraft designers choose the location, angle and shape of the strake to produce the desired interaction.
(via wikipedia)
I heard William Arkin talk about this on the radio today. He wrote a book I'd love to read, about how military operations are named.

Scarecrow--6:50 pm-- I worry about the things you mention in your post.

Paul,

really? I thought that post -- and a similar article Ben wrote about a fireman in New York City, seemed, well, contrived.... Especially the very stereotyped comments like those of the woman at the voting precinct.

But Ben wouldn't have done his special job then, would he?

"Charges may be delayed in Duke rape case"
"......According to the application for a court order seeking DNA samples from the team, a nurse trained to treat rape victims and a physician who treated the woman said they witnessed symptoms consistent with sexual assault. The document also includes details of a search of the house where the woman said she was raped for about a half-hour.
.....The victim’s four red polished fingernails were recovered inside the residence consistent to her version of the attack. She claimed she was clawing at one of the suspect’s arms in an attempt to breath (sic) while being strangled. During that time the nails broke off,” the police statement said....."
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12086087/
The physical evidence confirmed sexual assault, the question is, "who did it?"

Whoa. Did Thomas just "out" Ben with that "He's taken, and you ain't his type." comment?

I knew it. The self-loathing was just too telling.

margot: keep reading your wikipedia on 'strake' : it's a board that's used in construction to level sand or concrete. The giant bomb test in June in Vegas is called 'Divine Strake' - God's way of leveling a city or nuclear installation?

Shortly after that question arose, I found a link that was current at WaPo, that had the post. It was very similar to the original, but had an extra sentence added. I posted on FDL pointing out the extra sentence, but no one responded. I found the 2nd version by googling phrases in the original post, but I have no idea how to find it now. At the time, anyway, that last post was available via WPoo.com, but apparently at a different internet address than the original. Oh, plus the extra sentence there were minor corrections. So I surmised that Ben took the opportunity to "correct" his post, but didn't actually understand the internet mechanics of a seamless replacement.

I'm already working on a "My Pet Grover" pdb for the Pres. I'm donating all copyright proceeds to a CO called Lincoln Alexander Strategeries Group, a 501(c)(3) that writes and distributes fictitious bios for Republican lobbyists and politicians under indictment.

There motto is, "If we can print it, someone might believe it." They have already survived one status audit, but who could argue with the proposition that suspending reality is only charitable these days. I think Budweiser is applying under the same rationale.

Helping the world get plastered and believe that Clydesdale's have snowball fights: Because real life SUCKS!

The myth of Chivalry continued through the heroine Jenne d’Arc; more later with Matteo Maria Boiardo who revives the ideal of the knight fearless and blameless in the figure of the Paladin Orlando; and again Ariosto wrote of the ***chivalric*** myth with his “Orlando Furioso” and also Miguel de Cervantes with “Don Qujote”, Francois Rabelais in "Pantaguel” and "Gargantua”, and Edmond Rostand in "Cyrano de Bergerac”.
Mary, thanks for your way too kind comments.
IMO Shez nailed both above in her comment about Trevino:
"Oh christ, what an unhip bore this Josh troll is. Indeed he does not understand what a Hamsher STRAKE is! Yes "strake' is the correct word so his unenlightened and misguided use of 'sic' is hilarious. Do they ever read anything besides their verbal blowjobs to each other?"
I think Thomas figures his writing has more "uumph" if he uses something that hasn't been used for a couple of hundred years. OED has a great term for that escapes me at the moment.
We need all adults, regardless of gender or orientation to be "chivalrous," strong when strength is needed, gentle, when gentleness is needed.

Maybe you are being facetious, but Jim Brown has had some domestic violence issues himself. Once tried to throw his wife off a balcony.

"crappe" from the old english "krappen" from old saxon 'krapa' : feces!

But what about Thomas Crapper?

Thomas Crapper is apocryphal like Lilith

Nevertheless, I have heard that Ben is married to a biological female.

*ilson, darling... like that's any proof!

so is a goatee, Jacqrat

What, no Parsifal? (op is short for opera ;-) )

op99: ¿Que es.. "PK?

Jacqrat,
Preacher's kid

*ilson46201-- I wish I could remember more of the NPR Arkin interview, but that was the meaning he ascribed to it, I guess because he thought it was most apt.
But levelling does sound frighteningly apt in this case.

poseur's 'uumph'=bombast

From friends of mine at Georgetown (where the Thompson family name – father and son – is held in high esteem) I’ve learned that the father protested to WaPo executives having his name “dragged into politics” and that was sufficient to get the story stricken from the site.

Do you have any key phrases from the original post? I'd be curious to know if the (revised) post is still online at WaPo. I can't remember what I searched on to find the vanished first post (see comment above).

valley girl.... you can still see the original post at http://blog.washingtonpost.com/ r...nority_rep.html

p.lukasiak -- that sounds like a job for you ;) I would LOVE to be able to talk about that next week on DC radio.

Thanks *ilson, I just went into my files to find that same url for Valley Girl, my note beside it says 'Ben scrubbing?' We could always go look back in the threads from Thurs night or Fri morn when that was going down, VG highlighted the changed parts in her posts.

valley girl here is your previous post:
Okay, is anyone still interested in the vanishing and then reappearing post?

It has been edited:

First version:

But the truth is that Hispanics, like all minority communities, are hardly a monolithic group. While many Mexican and South American immigrant families would welcome a change in policy, my own Puerto Rican family simply doesn't care about the issue (since more people of Puerto Rican descent live on the American mainland than on the island now, that's hardly surprising And members of Latino communities who have been in America for generations and workers want the taxpayers to pay for employee health care.

Good job Dru! Bingo, that's it.

THIS IS not the OrigiNal post, at least not in the form that I saw it!!!! Please see above. I compared the two documents. I can't dig out the exact info right now, but this part or thereabouts was added-- I am putting what I remember to be the added part in bold-(and there were minor changes around the new phrase)

They are use to indicted peers but never to the turncoats among them. Honor among thieves and the sort of shit. Democrats will never understand that thinking.

that's just sic..... :-)

late to the party - gonna kick it upstairs.

John Dean is one of the real patriots in America today and for the last 30 years.

Cornyn doesn't seem to have a problem rubbing elbows with felons/authors like Oliver North....

Thanks for bringing it up again. it was exactly my first thought, ridicule coming from a man who shut down the casino's at Jack's request. Can'y wait for the trial. cornyn is a pathetic example of crony texas politics.

Isn't G. W. Bush a convicted felon also and a very good friend of Cornyn?

Immanentize: "Reason -- rather than the boot and glove covered fist which is what Trevino squats behind."

Hamsher: "Trevino you're out of here. You wouldn't allow someone insulting you -- let alone other commenters -- on Red State. You've crossed the line. Now get the fuck out."

Irony abounds! Yep, Jane, thin-skinned bully sounds about right.
