Barney!

welcome to the club, redd. so many of our senate dems are worse than appeasers, they're downright irrational cowards who can't get their staff to do the homework on whether or not frist has the support or is just full of shit.

pathetic.

Yeah, I never understood the argument that one had to vote for cloture, because the alternative was to give the Senate Majority leader the opportunity to use the 'Nuclear Option' which would then mean he'd be more powerful.

It's sort of like handing your wallet to a mugger before he even shows a weapon. Power (the filibuster) should not be surrendered so lightly, and certainly not simply because the Majority Leader is willing to pretend it doesn't exist.

I can't type a substative post, I get "too many blank lines" error.,,please fix

I'm clearly a bit cranky and sleep deprived this morning. And I'm sure this will ease later on today when I have time for a soothing cup of tea...but right now, I'm just pissed. And FYI, this house is a Barney free zone. He is akin to Satan in terms of irritation -- so this pic was a perfect one for my mood at the moment. *g*

will pice this together from previous thread which I couldn't post;

me to me -- we had to put in a scroll troll block in the haloscan comments code as a temporary measure. We're looking into a better option, but for the moment, it stays. Sorry -- but everyone is going to have to do smaller comments for a while, or several posts to fill out their whole comment. Soon as we find a better option, we'll let everyone know.

ARRRGH! All weekend I could not get hell-o-scan to scroll on my G/F's computer.*@%/# AOL. Now I get here and see Troll protection mode.I'd like to see someone come up with an automatic Whack-A-Troll.

Here’s a nurse tip of the day regarding fevers in kids. Try alternating two different types of fever-reducing medicine – the two best are acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Motrin). Be sure to use children’s versions and dose by weight (on the box). Then, schedule your doses for each drug every 6 hours, but overlap them so you’re giving something every 3hr.

Example: ibuprofen at 9am, 3pm and 9pm; acetaminophen 6am, noon, 6pm
However, think about why you are treating the fever. Fevers are really a good thing because viruses and bacteria do not live and reproduce in higher temperature environments. In the ER, I never got too worried about the actual temperature – I looked at the kid. A kid with heart or lung disease who would have trouble breathing faster or with a higher heart rate with the fever, we would treat aggressively. But for the average kid, who is unhappy because she doesn’t feel good, but otherwise OK – we would often let the fever go.

Re: the Padilla thing. A bit of "melt clock" here, buying time for a while until Bush can further pack the Court for eventually backing his play? Meanwhile, Gulaging may continue unabated.
_

fitz!

and hope the tea helps - thanks for all you do....

And for those kids with ear infections and temp of 103 who were tearing up the waiting room – they needed antibiotics, not fever medicine.
Now back to our regularly scheduled political programming.
(had to split up because haloscan wouldn't allow the whole post at once)

20 month old daughter, so far Barney has been kept at bay. But the Wiggles and Elmo have infiltrated our considerable defenses.

the middle class will be almost extermintated, we will be in servitude just to pay our bills, and debtors prison will return...fdic is the next insurance policy the middle class has that will be raided by these robber barons, they've already raided the insurance policy we had toward retirement funds if the company becomes insolvent.that policy failed and the fdic policy will fail...we will not even be able to pay taxes on our inflated

property, and the laws that prevent child labor and 40 hour work weeks will be rescinded...tax giveaways will go to people that send their children to private school, and public education will first become uncompetitive, underfunded, and it will dissapear...

Supremes ducking this Padilla issue is not a good omen.

HOwever, does it more or less validate/uphold what the Appeals Court said/did?

What should we expect with this case now?

Pat -- well, I luv me some Wiggles and Elmo. *g* We're doing Blue's Clues at the moment here. :) But Barney....shudder...the kids on that show are like audioanimatronic robot children. Blergh.

The report on the Padilla decision that I saw at TalkLeft said that Ginzburg, Souter and Breyer dissented. Ginzburg apparently wrote the minority opinion, which seems to say (IANAL) that it ain't moot, they've just dodged the question. Again.

power outage at the Capitol--well we've been dealing with that for a good while, huh?

Oh, PJ -- Looks like you spotted the TalkLeft update about the same time that I did. *g* GMTA.

any rubber stamp sightings today?

Wondering -- the rubber stamps are coming up shortly but, alas, not today. But definitely an update and some news very soon. *g*

KO, just tried to post, with ZERO "blank lines" and am being told there're "too many."

I dunno, the Wiggles are pretty scary.
The tea siiping rodent ballerinas that used to be popular in our house as well were not too bad.

Why wait for summer? Spring has sprung.

Redd, I have not-enough-work and a high-speed connection. I can go out looking while appearing to be busy.

re Padilla=moot
Well, whaddya expect when the new Chief Justice's judicial philosophy is that the Supreme Court's function is to:
a) avoid adjudicating, and
b) get really good at cross-word puzzles.

Kudos, FDL, for getting the Koufax award for Best Series for your Plame Affair coverage.

Really glad to see Glenn Greenwald take one for the Best New Blog too.

Woo hoo! congrats for the Koufax, and for runner-up placings as well.

"Too many blank lines, please reformat your post." Again, in the wake of a post attempt with NO blank lines. Whazzup with that?

I'd like to see someone come up with an automatic Whack-A-Troll.

What we need is an automatic Zap-A-Troll. When a trollsy clicks the publish button, they get a taser like shock through their keyboard -- that'll teach 'em!!!

I agree with me to me about the middle class. Actually I see the destruction of the middle class as one of the purposes of the Bush presidency. The bankruptcy law from last fall was a key piece, which will enable the ultra-rich to buy up more property after a crash causes the middle class's debts to be called in.
Do you think I'm being paranoid and radical?
Hardly. I'm taking the right wing at their word---Rove especially.
Their explicit goal is to return the US to the legal, social and financial structure of the Gilded Age. Why people don't take Rove et. al. seriously when they say they want to dismantle all the parts of government which people actually like, is beyond me.

BobbyG -- we had to institute an emergency scroll troll measure over the weekend due to an attack from the outside. It's a temporary fix until we can find a better way to deal with it. We were bombarded over the weekend by disruptive morons -- and it took an all-out effort by multiple people to keep the site going. If everyone could please have a bit of patience until we find a better solution, it would be much appreciated.

Redd - am right there with you on Barney...my kids loved Raffi, and I still remember my husband coming home and telling me he found himself singing "Baby Beluga" under his breath in a sales meeting...my pediatrician also used to tell us not to be afraid of a fever as long as the kid was running around the house, that with a virus, which does not respond to antibiotics, fever is your best weapon.

For some interesting perspectives on the "destruction of the middle class" as a deliberate policy. Check out Michael Ruppert in FromtheWilderness.com.

He states that 'demand destruction' is an actual policy in order to decimate the middle class and preserve the resources and tools of leadership and power for the elite.

As with the recent surfacing of the new 9/11 skepticism, it is mucho interesting and a bit scary and not necessarily untrue.

-GSD

caption for photo atop the thread -

"A Senator, a farcical character, and Barney".

We have been using the term "demand destruction" when talking to our manufacturing clients about the impacts of high energy prices on their businesses.

Part 2: Basically, it will get to a point when some manufacturers just drop out...demand destruction...because they can't pay the energy bills. In the energy world, I wouldn't say it's an actual policy, instead it's the blowback from having no energy policy.

Barney is not allowed in our house either. He makes me want to break something, he's so irritating.

We rented My Neighbor Totoro, but Erin, my little big girl (32mos.) was scared of Totoro, so we had to wait until she went to bed to watch the rest of it. She's been scared of bear-like things ever since the Dora episode where Dora gets chased by one...

Oh well, we enjoyed Totoro, and look forward to when Erin gets thicker skin!

Also re Padilla=moot...

The three "dissenting" justices (mentioned in the MSMBC article that Redd links) were Souter, Ginsburg, and Bryer. As most of us know, it only takes FOUR assenting justices to hear a case. (The "rule of four.")

Does anybody know why Justice Stevens did not vote to hear it? If he votes to hear it, it IS heard!! Stevens was the Justice who wrote earlier “at stake in this case is nothing less than the essence of a free society.” What has changed since then????

Wowie Zowie ! A well deserved Koufax and a great big Good On Ya to Glenn!.

btw, riding Christy and Jane's coat tails - I am dismayed observer mentioned in the win comments

Martha---interesting.
The part of this that most interests is the part closest to my heart... er, stomach. What about agriculture? Globalization of agriculture has always struck me as strange---not that we shouldn't import any foods, but why on earth should people in Kansas need to get food from NZ or Chile?
And why shouldn't staples be more locally produced? I think that is a key element of military security, frankly.
Globalization of agriculture has harmed the ability of local farmers to produce varied crops. What happens in an energy crunch?

Congratulations on the Koufax...

Best Series for Plame

And, lots of near-wins!

shouldn't Barney Frank be in that picture?

RE: photo atop the thread
I'd like to see who's really inside the 'Joe Lieberman animated character suit'...
~

I think "Whack-a-Troll" is trademarked by MegaTokyo.

Marky: in an energy crunch, we'll stop getting all those shipments of fruit and veggies from far away places. To me, the bottom line is we'd better try to support our local farmers--organic or conventional. Because they may need to pick up the slack, so to speak.

Well, let's see if bushco listens to Blix since they did not last time....
OSLO, Norway - Former U.N. chief weapons inspector Hans Blix said Monday that
Iran is a least five years away from developing a nuclear bomb, leaving time to peacefully negotiate a settlement.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060...re_eu/ iran_blix

The whole transportion aspect of an energy crunch is what worries me--and I don't mean daily driving habits. We've moved to a "just in time" world. My husband noted Friday that the U.S. will no longer manufacture spark plugs soon...among thousands of other parts that are necessary to make things operate. What if energy gets rationed--if only for a few weeks?

Martha, on the plus side, maybe people will tear up their stupid lawns and grow a few fruits and vegetables.
Do you know about the history of lawns in this country? It's rather interesting. In the mid 19-th century, the idea that everyone should have a lawn was promoted as a way to show that the US was more egalitarian than Britain, where a lawn was a symbol of wealth.
Stupid, stupid stupid.

Hey Marky...

Been policing any thought lately?

On Wednesday of this week, at two minutes and three seconds after 1:00 in the morning, the time and date will be 01:02:03 04/05/06.
That won't ever, ever happen again.

Larry, get over yourself yet?
If the free exchange of ideas bothers you, whitestate or LGF will welcome you.

Stupid is right. But Marky, perfectly manicured lawns are...so...perfect! Seriously, I try not to put on my tin foil hat too often, but knowing what I know about the energy world (particularly how manufacturers use it) and our current state of affairs, I've been thinking about stockpiling things more than I've ever...

RE: Padilla --

On NPR, Nina Totenberg said that the 6 justice majority sidestepped the issue, but include a warning that they would not favorably view another case like this.

Which suggests they dissent and the majority were closer on this than it appears at first blush. Of course, this POV did come from the Fox News franchise of NPR.

=====

gyro, nice catch.. but it will happen next month---in europe:)

Martha, what is your area? Some sort of consultant?
I like lawns too, btw... but I understand that people have lawns not to play on them, but for social status---same as why people buy gas guzzlers and big, energy-inefficient houses.

Congratulations on the Koufax!

P.S., Larry
I don't usually hold a grudge overnight, but I'm willing to make an exception in your case. You game?

Marky, in some areas, like Las Vegas, lawns are limited in size because of water usage restrictions.
Now if they banned bluegrass in areas with mean annual rainfall less than 20inches, that would help. More landscaping with native plants would be good, too.
This could also bring back canning and drying of foods. For those who get hold of wood or coal stoves, get something like Mrs Lincoln's Boston Cooking School or Fanny Farmer's Cook Books, because they come with instructions on managing them.

Fannie Farmer---that brings back memories! That was my mom's main cookbook.

Malarky

Accusing others of what you practice just doesn't sit well here.....Projection is a GOP suit .
Give it up....free exchange.. thats whats its all about and ...you know that.

In the course of the free exchange of ideas, I said that I thought your ideas were stupid and counterproductive. Deal with it----away from here, ok?
This is not a thread about your delicate ego.

How did I miss this?

The 2005 Koufax Award for best Series goes to FireDoglake for coverage of the Plame matter. Congratulations to Jane and Christy.

Marky, you really believe that Americans shouldn't have grapes in January?

Marky: we're energy consultants (I know, I know all the consultant jokes) who help manufacturers buy energy more cost effectively (thanks to deregulation, a whole other topic) and then use it more efficiently--process engineering improvements, etc.

What would we do without mangoes? I know, I know...old Bush joke.

Like I said projection doesn't suit you.

I think we should only get grapes in January if we're in Chile vacationing :) But, I have to admit I sometimes buy out of season stuff...instant gratification or craving and all that.

Anyone looking closely at where events may be heading regarding Fourth Generation Warfare generally.

And the analysis by emptywheel about a coming attack on Iran and its consequences?

Martha and Marky,

What about the government regulating the energy industry like it did before Reagan deregulated everything?

It seems to me the smart presidential candidate would push the issues of regulation for insurance, energy, and the airlines.

Yes Prof, I think emptywheel's analysis is excellent and very, very troubling.

Though there are many insurance companies, the prices seem to be artificially fixed by the industry.

Just think, if a ceiling were placed on health insurance prices, mainstream America could probably afford it.

Anyone looking closely at where events may be heading regarding Fourth Generation Warfare generally. And the analysis by emptywheel about a coming attack on Iran and its consequences?

The other problem I have with the "destruction of the middle class" argument, it operates with the premise that the government does what it wants to in the U.S.

While this is undeniably a period of incompetence and corruption in our government, never forget that the power wielded by the government is given to the government by the people.

Can someone post the basic steps for solving the problem of long sentences not posting, or whatever the scroll blocker is doing? I read that one could insert two "breaks" but that doesn't work (and if it did, the forces of darkness and evil could easily insert that).

Wyonate: Part of the problem with deregulation is the entrance of market players who're in it for all the bucks they can wring out of unsuspecting/uneducated customers (Enron and its brethren come to mind). And then there's that problem that many of today's "free" markets aren't really so free of outside influences/manipulations.

Scott Ritter did an amazing essay on the lack of an antiwar movement-- written 3/31/06 and I finally came upon it! Definately worth a read.

I so agree with your advice to let fevers go on some occassions. How do you deal with parents who don't get that there comes a time when you should treat it? My son's pediatrician was sued for giving similar advice, except he said if it gets close to 103 it's time to revisit the advice. They didn't, the fever soared and they ignored it and he ended up in the hospital, very sick.

Help. I am trying to post a comment and get a message that I have too many "blank lines." Is this the server, or is it my computer?

My grandfather always said "There is nothing like the belly button hitting the backbone to get the American voter off their butt."

The administration declares you an "enemy combatant" and jails you without evidence. Years later the Court agrees to hear your case. The administration then charges you with some crime (e.g., ripping the tag off a mattress) after "investigating" while you're in jail. The administration argues that your case is "moot" and the Court agrees. You are tried and found NOT guilty. The administration declares you an enemy...

Martha,
I believe that in less than five years, health insurance, airlines, and energy will all be regulated by the federal government.-
It is an issue of national security and even the corporations will be backing the move. --Nobody wins if the U.S. economy collapses.--

Why is Congress touching the third rail of immigration in an election year? Why are senators pondering the introduction of a 27% trade tariff with China (Schumer, Chafee)? --Because their constituents are sick of feeling the economic pinch and are starting to grumble.

sonate, it's not you, we had a "scroll troll" on Saturday who was abusing the bandwith with very, very, very long, balnk (white space) comments. ReddHedd commented earlier today, IIRC, that it's just a temporary fix until they figure out something better.

The corporate world's mining of our youth has reached it's final silly conculsion.

I realize that Spencer Davis's "Gimme Some Lovin'" will create warm fuzzy feelings, and a favorable disposition towards investment opportunities. But who the hell decided that "In-A-Goda-Da-Vida" would be a swell tune to sell mutual funds?

On NPR they said the Court specifically warned the government not to go the route of enemy combatant to charged to enemy combatant or the Court would revisit. Of course, this is a Court that is worthy of even less respect than the 2000 Rehnquist one.

Why would you believe what a GOP staffer says? They're liars and sacks of poo.

Truth is, no one knows if any side had the votes or not. Buying the Dem's are weak on the word of a GOOPER staffer is fantasy.

wyonate | 04.03.06 - 11:25 am |

That is actually funny. Isn't China WTO? and even if not, they hold to much of our debt for us to dink with them like that.

I'm not sure about complete energy regulation in the next five years. Natural gas is deregulated for larger "industrial" (they make stuff) customers and it is actually going fairly well. It's electricity that's the problem--deregulated in a few states for all customers (residential and businesses) and regulated in most others.

the legal eagles may want to head over to SCOTUS Blog if you haven't already - 2 of this morning's posts on Padilla imply it's not exactly a decisive victory for Admin.

Use
instead of hitting return to put in breaks...

Well, that doesn't work for me. When I wrote a sentence without any breaks the anti-scroll "feature" refused to post the sentence. When I broke the sentence in two, it still refused (at least where I had embedded links in that one sentence, or those two).

So "br" is not the answer when there are no breaks at all.

See my analysis of what does work, and what doesn't, above.

And in the next year or so, residential customers in some states (IL, for example) are going to freak out at the size of the rate increases. In the deregulated states, rates were "frozen" for a few years...the caps are coming off and it's not pretty. Even in regulated states, electricity bills are climbing, especially if new power plants are under construction.

I like the catch in the Klein piece. Here we have Dems who can't count to 60 and a President who can't count at all and they are "managing" a multi trillion dollar economy. It makes you cry.

Today on the Wolfman and Jack show:

Micheal Ware of Time magazine.

Martha,
In Wyoming our natural gas prices have doubled in one year. This could help the sole Rep. lose her seat. That would be the first time in years that Wyoming didn't have a GOP Rep. (good news, double edged sword).

Can someone explain what kind of post is ok with the scrolltroll fix? If we know what we can/can't post, it will be less frustrating. Actually, I'm not sure I could be less frustrated today; Padilla has me almost in tears. You guys can put St in front of Comey all you want, but I will always see him as the guy who was happy to be the face for this and where it has taken us. On reason they are ducking it is that it would almost have to put paid to the NSA program by the analysis they would use.

many of today's "free" markets aren't really so free of outside influences/manipulations.
Martha | 04.03.06 - 11:16 am |

My mantra is that there has never been any such thing as a free market. It is merely a question of who is regulating it and for whose benefit.

But the nuclear option was thwarted when 14 Senate moderates cut a deal to keep the rules and allow votes on some of the appointees. "We saved him on that," said a G.O.P. staff member involved in the negotiations. "Frist never had the votes he needed for the nuclear option."

WHAT!!?? Does that mean what I think it means -the Dems rolled over on that one!?? Is that right?

Martha

Ill. has bigger problems still, all those old nuke plants. Three that have been leaking into the ground water. They're all coming to the end of their lives, with great pressure to keep them on line.

Sonate, there'snothing to say that they can't take him back into military custody even if he's found guilty and go ahead and charge in the tribunal for things that they don't have evidence to charge for in court etc.

A simple 'enter' worked on my computer for a new paragraph. Interesting. Since I had few problems also with the changeover, must be just certain software???

Sorry, Prof, It (<br>) seemed to work for me. Thanks for performing the series of tests to help posters figure out how to post properly with the scroll troll b-gone our gracious hostesses have put in place.

Christy,

Are we gunna get Libby PartII?

KEEP THE FAITH, IT'LL BE FUN IN THE CAMPS WITH ALL YER FRIENDS!!

IL is in trouble with their nukes, but WI and other states have issues as well. Wyanote, WY is not alone. We have customers whose natural gas prices have almost doubled in the last year or so. Natural gas markets are not exactly sane...mention the word "hurricane" these days and watch the prices spike. They also seem to track with oil but shouldn't.

GrandmaJ

I'm not having any trouble, but I was kicked off the site Sat. night by troll scroll.

I have a steam powered computure with abacus software.

wyonate--- in Ohio we can change natural gas companies. It is hugely more expensive this year than last, though, no matter who you pick.

As the drumbeat of Republican misdeeds rolls on, more attention will necessarily be focused on the cowardice and complicity of most Democrats in them.
Under Bush, we have not had two parties but one party with two names. Nader thought this was the case before 2000 but with his misguided run he helped fulfill his own prophecy.

There's the Kodak peregrines:

Regarding the sudden immigration frenzy. To me, it's classic Rove tactics. All the shit getting ready to hit the fan.
Such as ,Abramoff,Delay,Noe,Libby, approval ratings etc. Change the subject.

This Administration gives new meaning to the phrase JUSTICE IS BLIND.

The truth will set you free!

I propose a contest. Get a picture of Clinton, Biden, Kerry, Schumer, Feinstein, Lieberman, and Barney and see if anyone can pick out Barney from the group.

Are we still on this thread?

John Casper | 04.03.06 - 11:26 am |

Thanks for the info. I was ready to "clean" my computer!

Mary | 04.03.06 - 11:50 am |
Any indication as to why Stevens did not vote to hear the case? I am stunned he did not.

From the WaPo chat today:
"Rochester, N.Y.: Last week Murray was reported in the National Journal that Bush was explicitly warned that portions of the case for WMD was likely faulty -- specifically the part about the infamous aluminum tubes. This seems important, because it strengthens the argument that Bush intentionally misled the country about this issue. Is The Post planning on following up on this?

Big surprise imo that the WaPo printed the Murry Wass comment above. Here is the last sentence from "Rochester."
"Or do you have your hands full with puff pieces about how the President's new, moreopen style is winning audiences over."

Bustednuckles | Homepage | 04.03.06 - 11:58 am |

Hillary is probably on this and will no doubt shortly propose her own legislation to restrict lobbying by gay illegal aliens who wish to burn the flag at their marriage ceremonies. Sounds about right.

marky, this is the most recent thread I have, but routinely other regions of the country get the newest thread before I do.

Just that he joined in the "but gosh, we will be keeping an eye on you, you Wascally Wesident Wou, opinion by Kennedy. In something the same vein as having Roberts and Dewine in charge of oversight. This is what Luttig did at least try to prevent and Roberts cut him off at the knees with the transfer order. I can't figure why Stevens is ok with it but there are so many battles to fight these days, he may just be picking his.

Howie Skirts at Wapoo.

Nice of Howie to use violent metaphors when describing Olbermann and his treatment of Bush. I guess George is "under attack" literally.

What a douche.

I was unaware of the existence of this blog - thanks cbl.

I'll now alter my considered legal opinion from "chickenshit" to "99.9% chickenshit". Sorry - I just can't help the speaking in legalese thing.

Housing market hurting, and people holding ARMs hurting---greedy uber-rich licking their chops.

Mary | 04.03.06 - 11:50 am | #

thanks for the response. Even though we are all feeling outrage on a daily basis, I always feel it a little more when it affects one of the good guys/gals like yourself.

keep forgetting to tell you and maybe it can bring a chuckle or wry smile to ya today - I recently gave a Repub. Judicial candidate heartburn at a meet and greet several weeks back by using your points and arguments on Youngstown don't think I'll be invited back

Remember, it was Mr. Andrea Mitchell who was pushing the ARMs a few years ago.

marky | 04.03.06 - 12:10 pm | #

Sorry - not me. I hope that Mary did a decent job.

Mary, it was quite unpleasant all around---not the usual Ablog experience.

New York Times article on Lamont/Lieberman race:

This is a hit-and-run, sorry if it's already been posted.

John Casper-- I got a nice chuckle from that exchange on wapo this am.

Hugh | 04.03.06 - 11:31 am |

Did Nina convey which Justice "warned" the administration. From the tone of the MSNBC article, I'd guess it's Roberts. (I still wonder what happened to Stevens.)

"Night after night, President Bush is being kicked, punched, slapped, poked, stomped and otherwise disrespected in one small corner of the cable television world."

Classic misdirection on why the rest of the media, including Howie, aren't, oh say, doing their jobs.

"you, you Wascally Wesident Wou,"

They just said "the Court." I assumed it was in the majority opinion but do not know which judge wrote it.

By the way, verdict on whether Moussaoui is eligible for death will ne announced at 4pm Eastern -- in about 45 minutes.

Hugh,

"Nader thought that before 200 this was the case but with his misguided run he helped fullfill his own prophesy"

Don't even start with tryin' ta rehabilitate Nader...we now know after his takin money from the fascists in 2004 that he has been tryin ta fill the vaccuum on the left even if he hasta help create it. Nader is all about Nader and he is as culpable for our having an illegitimate fascist administration as any other single person.

KEEP THE FAITH AND LEARN WHO THE ENEMY IS!!!

Nader, if he is not crazy, is a purist who believes that causing more pain in the short term is necessary for political victory in the long run. This is why he was a whole-hearted supporter of Bush in 2000 and 2004.

From drudge:
Laura Bush became so disgusted with the media and their war against her husband that at one point, she told her public relations person Noelia Rodriguez she did not want to do any more media interviews. After about a month, she slowly resumed talking to the press

That helped cbl. It's not like I haven't been expecting it; not every meltdown needs to be typed I guess. If RH does a LibbyIII I'm hoping to be distracted, but I'm at the point of "what's it matter" when you have a whole Congress and DOJ geared up to not just defend torture- but mainstream and legalize it, etc. scroll stuff keeping me from ranting.

Sonate - Kennedy, Stevens and Roberts joined in an opinion that said, well, its serious and all, but Padilla already has the remedy he originally sought and well, gosh, we'll be keeping an eye out on those scamps in the govt.

The housing bubble, threatened tariffs, and interest rates have a nice tie in. China artificially keeps its currency low by buying US T notes. This keeps its prices and the yuan low. But their buying our debt keeps our interest rates artificially low, helping to support the housing market. The effect on ARMs would be much worse if China was not there currently bailing us out.

NorskeFlamethrower | 04.03.06 - 12:21 pm |

Not to worry, I'm not smoking what Nader is. This country would be a lot different and a lot better under a Democratic President since 2000. I agree. Nader's remark became self fulfilling when the Dems allowed themselves to be so coopted under Bush. It's bad enough they sold out but they didn't even gain anything by it.

You're right Hugh and they only bail us bc we are their buyers. If we make their goods less favorably positioned, they don't have the same incentives. I can't imagine anyone with a conscience and scruples who would want to run this ship of state for the next 4 yrs, after what has been done to it. It really may as well go to an incompetent egotist. Silly me - that's the whole field, isn't it?

Don't listen to that guy Mary ! He's been banned from one blog and was pilloried for his serial sexism here (snark snark!)

Klein is right and Specter was the problem. (continued on next post/haloscan problem)

"Senior Republican sources tell Fox, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and The Bush White House were worried enough about possibly losing the vote to end judicial filibusters that they dispatched two conservatives, SC Lindsey Graham and Ohio's Mike DeWine to cut the best possible deal.

The principle source of anxiety was Judiciary Chairman Arlen Specter. Top GOP sources say it was unclear until the last minute how Specter would vote.

cbl,

I would guess they are trying to appeal to the base, again.Cutting off their nose to spite their face.IMO.Should be a HUGE backlash in 3...2...1. Oh wait, it already happened.

Speaking of the WaPo, I've started my own private fight with George Will over that swarmy little op ed on Global Warming he wrote yesterday.

Talk about cherry pickin' the intel.

Mary | 04.03.06 - 12:38 pm |

We probably haven't seen the combination of foreign and domestic disasters since the end of the Vietnam War. Feingold gives a ray of hope but it is too early to tell if he is the real thing. I agree about the standard cast of characters, though.

Dewine said uncertainty was very real.

DeWine: "No one knows how the vote on the Constitutional Option would have come out. We might have won. We might have lost. If we lost it would have been devastating to the president."

Specter: "I can do alot better with divergent interests if I maintain as close to a centrist position as possible and that means keeping quiet."

Mary | 04.03.06 - 12:29 pm |

Thanks for the update on the Padilla opinions. I'm disappointed (to say the least) with Justice Stevens.

lol, The only time Specter is being quiet is when he has a d*ck in his mouth.

The posts at 12:47 is a continuation of the post at 12:45. Haloscan won't let me post it all at once.

There was little reporting on the how the deal was done, but Klein is right see the link at 12:45 post.

what Hell-o-scan wouldn't let me include is - why would they expend energy, let alone a national campaign to fire up their remaining 33% - it's a f***ing black capsule, my bi lingual daughter sent me transcribed comments from LA myspace- catholic priests were registering voters all week end.

Are you saying that Specter couples in the Centrist Position?

From the link:Updated: 8:49 a.m. ET March 31, 2006WASHINGTON - A one-two punch of bleaching from record hot water followed by disease has killed ancient and delicate coral in the biggest loss of reefs scientists have ever seen in Caribbean waters.Researchers from around the globe are scrambling to figure out the extent of the loss. Early conservative estimates from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands find that about one-third of the coral in official monitoring sites has recently died.

ok - re Padilla, I've re-reconsidered. 100% pure unadulterated chickenshit. The Court could have, and most certainly should have, taken this opportunity to demand that no U.S. citizen is EVER, under any circumstances, and no matter what bull-shit label an insane president slaps on him/her, is held without the rights afforded under the Constitution of the United States of America.

to be cont.

off topic>>>eagles

Thanks Prof for the eagle cam. We have a nest built here on the Shell Rock River's edge, for the first time in local memory. We have had a dozen or so wintering here but no nests until now. What an amazing structure: a cone about six feet long and five across the top, wedged into the very top branches of a tall tree. We went to look at a respectful distance and saw a fierce white head motionless just above the rim. It's wonderful to have an "inside" view.

And the case also presented opportunities for concurring opinions filled with cautionary dicta touching issues such as torture, rendition, the connections between the Geneva Conventions and existing U.S. law.

They might possibly have even looked (or is it re-looked?) at the concept of indefinite anonymous detentions.
They punted - reprehensible.
