The actual number of people killed by their own governments is hard to quantify. The Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China actually tried to hide the numbers, genocide in Rawanda, and Cambodia was carried out with little or no accurate records of the population to begin with.
The applogists for Communism will even dispute the figure given here, as they adamantly maintain that very few people died in The Great Leap Forward or the Cultural Revolution, and since the press saw fit to cover up the starvation of Ukrainians - they were so much in love with Communism - that some will even claim it didn't happen.
The number that Oleg put in the graphic is a safe compromise.
