This scenario is one of my greatest fears as a CHL holder. I know for a fact that many cops are ignorant of the law.

This was not ignorance, hammer. It was arrogance and character deficiency. These assholes need to lose every possession they have, spend time in jail, and if education is the answer, it should only extend to teaching them to say "Would you like fries with that?".
