Basilone died within just a few seconds of gaining the beach at Iwo. He had just yelled to his men "Let's get the Hell off this beach" when the unit took a direct arty hit. Hadn't been out of the landing craft 30 seconds.

I worked for a Iwo Jima veteran. 1st Battalion, 21st Marines, 5th Marine Division. It is a humbling experience listening to a veteran speak of their service. You can read his story here:

I saw Flags of our Fathers with Clay and another marine veteran. A veteran who had also been on the Tinian and Saipan invasions. Both sat stock still and said they could smell the sulpher as soon as the combat started.

I can't wait to see the mini series.
