Beg Your Own Question Here

The only Wilco I have is YHF. Don't like it. What earlier album should I be listening to?

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to explain what the hell the refrain of Barrier Reef means. I was willing to accept it as a mildly mysterious when I thought the lyric was "a good time span," i.e., long life, but had to dub it a frustrating total nonsequitor when I discovered it's really "a Good Times van," i.e. Jimmy Walker.

That one flaw aside, I still can't listen to : "She said, do you have a car? And I said, do I have a car?" without laughing out loud. Like, whoa, I'm getting laid!

My wife and I have 12 Nina Simone albums between us. She is one of the greatest singers of the last 50 years, IMO. She is so damn soulful; her music is hypnotic. There's a queen, if ever i've heard one.

Dylan -- I don't have any other Wilco, but have heard snippets here and there. I can't recommend anything specifically. But my sense was that I liked the earlier stuff that's on the concert album.

I addressed your other query in the text of the post.

Interesting. I went through a little Old 97s phase in college, but haven't heard anything new in a few years. Maybe I'll download a few tunes.

And I love Nina Simone.

There are a couple of good songs on Wilco's AM which has been out for awhile.

If you liked Uncle Tupelo you might try Son Volt (the other band that came out of the Uncle Tupelo split). Trace is a great album/cd (or whatever they're called now). Another great band is Reckless Kelly...can't go wrong with any of their cds.
mmk

That was such a comprehensive review!

Thankyou, I think I have a lot of listening to do now!
