I feel the exact same way about varigated sock yarns, and my Jules socks evoked all the same feelings. So pretty to pet, but looked too random when knitted up. I think they do well for cowls, though. That's going to be my new thing for varigated sock yarns. That, or scarves.
Thanks for the shout out about the Opulant Raglan! it's an awesome sweater, I love it to pieces. You're going to love yours, once you trade in your yarn! That's hilarious about the colour, it's an exact match! so many people have a tough time finding foundation to match their skin tone, and you have yarn!!

i have the saaame issue with self striping yarn. kind of does not do it for me at all.
