LOVE it Farrah! I too am opposed to pastels for babies, perhaps it's another one of those "farrah" tings.

Great job! It was totally worth all those ends needing to be woven in, and the instructions-with the charts and everything! Well done I say!

I have never knit a baby blanket before and am wondering, how many needles did you use? only 2, or one for each side?
Love the blanket and would love to try this one out.

Stasi- I only used 2 needles. Each block is knit just like a regular mitered square block, but it's picked up from the previous blocks. I'm not sure if I answered your question...

Hi there,
I think this blanket is really cute and am excited that all the little squares don't need to be sewn together at the end (I hate that part). However, I've never done this before and could use a little clarificiation. Do you have any pictures showing how to pick up the stitches and attach the next square?
Thanks!

I don't have any pictures of myself doing it, but it is attached by picking up stitches from the edge of a previous square. You can see a video of that here: http://www.knittinghelp.com/vide...s/knitting-
tips
And there are several tutorials online. If you google "picking up stitches" you'll find several.
Hope this helps- good luck!

Hi There,
I found this blanket online one day and fell in love with it. I'm not a very experienced knitter and I just need a little help! I've finished the first square and am having trouble adding the second one. Has anyone tried this and successfully added on the second square? Am I supposed to pick up 14 stitches along the edge of the first square? And then cast on 14 stitches onto the needle? Any help anyone can give would be fanstastic!

Hi, Jenna-
I'm so glad you like the blanket! The stitches are picked up along the edge of the first square- if you look at the chart with all the numbers on it, it will guide you as to which edge it should be picked up from. And yes, then you cast on 14 stitches onto the needle after you've picked up those stitches. Feel free to email me if I can be more helpful.

Hi, Connie-
I don't think you're doing anything wrong. My squares also looked weird and diamond shaped in the beginning. They didn't start to even out until I got to the second layer- it's like they need the second layer of squares to be attached in order to have enough structure to take their shape. I hope this helps!

Thanks for the great pattern. I just made this blanket for a friend's baby this summer but used Mirasol Cotanani instead of the Cotton-Ease (60% Pima Cotton, 40% Merino Wool) The only change I made to the pattern was to leave off the outer (last) layer of mitred squares and make a slightly wider solid boarder (I did 12 rows rather than 5). It turned out beautifully and the new mom loved it. I also used the left over cotanani to quickly knit up a french style shopping bag (I got the pattern from purlbee - http://www.purlbee.com/elisa-nest-tote/ ), wrapped the blanket in tissue paper and put it in the bag for the shower.
What a great looking, modern and robust pattern - this blanket is certain to hold up and look great for years. Thanks for posting it!

hi farrah!
i absolutely love this blanket you came up with!
i've searched all over the web for a baby blanket i wanted to make, and i fell in love with this one!
i've tried starting it, and the first square came out great, but i can't figure for the life of me how to get the second square started, especially when it says to cast on an additional 14 stitches. is there any way that you can post additional pictures or details on getting to the second square? i would appreciate it so much!

I just wanted to check as this wool is not widely available in the UK, the website where I found it are charging £3.50 per 100g ball which works out about the equivalent of $70.00.

Hi, Margaret- I'm so happy you're making the blanket! I’m sorry, though- I didn’t measure it before I gave it away (what was I thinking???), and the recipient lives in New Jersey. There is a picture of it on my bed, to give you a little perspective on size.

Thank you for sharing this pattern. I love it! I do have a question, however. (I'm rather new at knitting, so I hope this isn't too silly.)
After picking-up 14 stitches, do you knit those 14 prior to picking-up the DD and casting on the 14 stitches?
Thank you.

Hi,
How difficult would you rate this pattern, it's beautiful. How do you cast on the other 14 stitches after picking up for the secontd square? Thank you for your help.

Hi, Babs-
I don't think the pattern is that difficult once you get the hang of the mitered squares. It gets pretty repetitive after a while, in fact.
I don't exactly remember, but I believe I used the knitted cast on to cast on the other 14 stitches. Here's a link to a video on YouTube:

Hope that helps,

Where and when does this get cast on? "you only need to cast on new stitches 4 times per round (once for each side)."
What square in the round?
Thank you very much for answering the last question, I have the first four squares done.
One other, when you say "pick up and k 14 sts along the edge of previous square" pick up 1 st from the top DD of the square," that's just picking up from outer edge to center, not actual knitting, also picking up the top DD from the center?
Last one: I was turning to wrong side to after picking up stitches to cast on and knit the row, so that I was on the right side when DD. Would that be correct?
Thank you so much, my four squares look right, I just want to make sure. It does really go fast once you get what your supposed to do, I'm a little dense sometimes.

Hi, Babs-
Hmmm..the link is working for me. If you'd like to find it yourself you can go to youtube.com and type in "knitted cast on". You'll see several videos that might be helpful.
When I say you only need to cast on new stitches 4 times per round, it just means that you'll only cast on new stitches for the block that sticks out from the rest, creating a new side. This actually would probably make more sense once you are doing it- I was trying to be helpful by adding that bit in, but it may be more helpful to you to ignore it.
I made the blanket almost 2 years ago, so I'm having a little trouble remembering the details. I'll try to think about your last question.

Hello! This is such a beautiful pattern. I have knitted really, really basic stuff sporadically over the past 3 years, so I'm sorry if my question is silly. Did you use straight needles or circular ones?
Also, about how long did it take you to complete this? I want to make it for my friend's baby shower, but I'm not sure if I will have enough time.
Thank you so much!

Hi,
I'm sorry I have to ask such a dumb question, but I am not a very good knitter and I just want to make sure before I start the border. I just want to make sure I understand it correctly. For lines 1,3,& 5, I am supposed to slip one, knit one stitch and then knit one stitch through the front and back right? What does the knitting through the front and back accomplish exactly? Thanks so much to anyone who can help me. I'm excited to finish this blanket!!

Hi, Jen-
Yes, you are supposed to knit through the front and back loop. This makes the border edges into a diagonal line that perfectly matches the diagonal line made at the adjacent side. That way you can seam those together to form a square. If you didn't increase, you would just have a border that didn't meet up with the border on the adjacent side to be able to seam.
I feel like that sounded all convoluted- I hope it makes sense!

Have a question (problem) I am now working on my 5th round and noticed that on block 13, round three my miter is not correct. Can I correct this without taking out two rows of squares?
By the way, I love this blanket, thank you so much for sharing and all of your help!!
Look forward to hearing from you.

This is a really beautiful, simple, and well written pattern! I so want to knit this for a friend of mine who just had a baby, but am not sure that I'll have the time. Her present is already SO overdue! I'm trying to talk myself into the idea that she'd rather have a belated, well made, beautiful blanket than one that I threw together in a hurry. Anyway, just wanted to say how lovely the pattern is.

hi,
i'm in the middle of this blanket, and just love the pattern! but one question: in row 5, is the colorblock pattern on the left hand side in the diagram above accurate? it seems to be a different color-pattern than the other three sides of that round. (violet-blue-pink-green-pink-blue instead of violet-green-pink-green-pink-blue.)
thanks!

Hi, Lydia-
You are probably right. I didn't use a good system to make up the color diagram- I basically just put colors in and rearranged them until I could get as few same colors next to one another as possible. Others who have made this pattern have noted a mistake in the diagram, so this must be what they are talking about. I would go with however you think it would look best.
Hope that helps!

Farrah,
The needles I have been using to knit the blanket are not large enough to pick up stitches on the entire edge, what type of needles did you use to do the border? Circular needles?
Thanks

Hi Farrah,
I am finally starting the border and I'm just a bit confused how to go about doing this. I have cast on the stitches along one side of the blanket. Why do we slip one if we are trying to increase the stitches? Also, I'm not sure how to go about knitting a stitch through the front and back, are you able to give a bit more explanation?
Thanks!

Question:
I'm considering starting this, only I'll be quadrupling it to make a massive blanket for my 6'3'' dad for Christmas. I'm confident that I can configure the diagrams for the rest of the rounds, but I have a simple question first-
Did you really use circulars for everything, or just the borders? Seems like it would be easier to work with straight needles until border time. Am I wrong?

Hi, Kara-
I prefer circular needles, so I use them for everything, but there is no reason that you couldn't use straits at the beginning. You'll probably have to switch to circs eventually because there will be so many stitches, especially if you're making a bigger blanket.
Hope that helps!

Did you start with shorter ones and then work up to longer ones? I have some 16" ones, but I assume I'll have to get much longer towards the end. Sorry to be so curious, I'm still a beginner

Kara-
I just used longer ones the whole time because they feel more comfortable to me when I'm using them for non-circular knitting (in other words, in situations where others might use straights, I prefer to use 29" circs).

I love this blanket! I saw it online and I kept coming back to it over and over again--I love the geometry and the bright colors! I've decided to make it for a baby girl due in July (I'd better get crackin'!); I'm going to use hot pink, lime green, light blue, dark blue, and cream. To "girl" it up a bit, I'm going to do the border in hot pink instead of blue. Maybe add some scallops on top of that? Or a ruffle? We'll see. I'll send you a picture when I'm done...wish me luck, and thanks so much for the pattern!
