I think you have to marinate on film or music a while to judge how your appreciation holds up over time. If the Academy had been required to withhold voting for 1990 best picture, Goodfellas would surely have won over Dances with Wolves.

I agree completely. That's why I like to do this little exercise each year. Why do I rank them during the year they came out is a better question: because it's fun!

Nice call about Goodfellas over Dances with Wolves. Sometimes it's hard to tell what the heck the academy was thinking. But I'll mostly leave the movie rants to Joel.
