It's easier to step forward into a responsible position when you're dealing with oil than it is when you're peddling tobacco.
Also -- tobacco was boxed in by science, and had no other strategy but to stall.
Even if there is a consensus today on global warming, there is not yet a consensus about the role of human effects. That makes Sir John's bold move appear more magnanimous than if he appeared to be in denial.
