I was thinking of this particular story while watching NBC's Winter Olympic coverage a few weeks ago. They were touring a Turin museum that contains more than 30,000 Egyptian artifacts. Italians began acquiring statues, mummies, papyri and other articfacts and shipping them home beginning in the 1750s. I didn't hear anything about the Italians feeling compelled to give any of the pieces in their collection back to Egypt.
