Interesting assessment, Leslie. Judging from some o the feedback this item elicited, and living in NY during his reign as Mayor, you could very well be right.

Most pundits and amateur observers of the political process, identify Rudy's strategical gaffes as just that, strategical mistakes. I don't see it that way. He didn't do poorly in the erly primaries because he spent no time or money there, he did poorly in the early primaries BECAUSE he did spend time there. THE MORE PEOPLE GOT TO KNOW HIM THE LESS THEY LIKED HIM--which explains why he rated higher the less people knew him.

It's so great to learn something I didn't know about my blogging friends. Parmet, didn't know you were a politico, and Claire, you're in Iowa???!
Thanks for the comments. Someone warned me to refrain from sharing my political leanings through this particular microphone. I'm thus also relieved by your comments.

I worked down the hall in the Office of the City Council Speaker during Rudy's time in NYC. I can tell you the arrogance and obnoxiousness of the former Mayor were qualities reflected in his staff - from Commissioners on down. It was very unpleasant dealing with those folks. I'm glad to see him ride off into the sunset.

Observing the political primary season from a front row seat here in Iowa, Giuliani not only committed extraordinarily stupid gaffes (answering a cell phone call from his wife during an important speech comes to mind)...but he truly botched his political strategy. I'm sorry, I know Florida is big and has Disneyworld, but since when did it become more important politically than Iowa and New Hampshire? Thanks, Rudy, for giving Iowa another reason to be first.
