I'm in the middle of a disgruntled situation right now. One of the editors who works under me in my department has been having to take a lot of time off to finish her thesis. I don't care, because her work still gets done on time and accurately. But our mutual boss is at a slow simmer, and I'm pretty sure when it gets less busy my co worker is going to get fired--not because she did anything wrong, or caused any problems for anyone else, just because she asked for too much schedule flexibility.
My boss is one of those passive-aggressive nervous old lady types who is more concerned with whether your ass is in the seat at the right time than whether your work is done well.
I had the same problem with my manager when I worked at Borders--she freaked out if I read something at the info desk when there were no customers and nothing to do. Never mind that it was, you know, a *bookstore*....

Emjaybee - it's not just Borders! B&N freaks out if you read, too, even when there's nobody in the store and nothing to do.

My first job was really low paid but when I started I was full of enthusiasm and very willing to do extra work. Over the course of several months my boss' distrustful and over critical nature sucked all that out of me. By the end I didn't give a flying fig whether I was any good at all.

Wouldn't it be good to be seen reading while working in a book store? I mean, as long as you're doing your job. By reading, you're demonstrating that you use the products you sell! That's good!

Flea, you are after my own heart with this one. Having been in a variety of each-is-shitter-than-the-last service positions, I can say you hit the nail directly on the head for me. Treat me like a thief and I'll steal, treat me like I'm stupid and I'll act stupid, treat me like I'm trying to get out of doing my work and I will indeed try to get out of doing my work. It's very simple, actually, and one would think more bosses would figure it out.
Good for you for being one of the ones who has.

Emilin, by that logic, it shouldn't it be okay for Flea's employees to masturbate on the job?

It may be okay for them to do so, but the real question is, does flea *expect* them to?
The great thing about the version of disgruntled that service-industry employees get to, um...employ is that there's no question about the worthiness of the disgruntle. Whereas corporate disgruntled employees such as myself have that nagging uncertainty.

limpet, I think that takes the idea of in-store demonstrations a little too far.

Yeah, definitely too far. Whoa.
I don't "go tanning," but if I went to a tanning salon and found the staff all pale, pale, pale, I wouldn't want to tan there.
Or buy makeup from someone who wears none.
Or eat at a restaurant where the staff isn't allowed to eat the food.

I think the guy in the corner that was such a difficult customer and bad tipper deserves a visit from the topiary rabbit.
