Poor baby! Here I was, thinking, why on earth are they putting themselves through all that Toddler Torture? Why would they DO that? And come to discover it's all due to that perennial fave, Parental Guilt.
Give him lots of kisses from the portias, and rest easier: eventually, he'll be glad they're gone.

Aw, poor little guy. Remember -- smoothies and ice cream make recuperating from mouth issues much, much more pleasant.
Applesauce, bleah. Smoothies, yeah!
... and no, you don't know me, but you write most excellent stories! I really enjoy reading your blog.

flea, are you sure he isn't channelling Ralph Wiggum? :P Just kidding - I'm sure any kid of yours is smarter than Ralphie.

Lots of good thoughtsfor both Alex and you - my SO (to whom I read your blog out loud since he hears my giggles anyway and wonders what's up) had this surgery when he was little older than Alex and he seconds the smoothies and ice-cream suggestions.

My son is supposed to have his tonsils out too. He is turning five next month and I want to do it before he starts Kindergarten but I'm dragging my feet on it. His tonsils are huge, but the surgery is purely optional because right now he doesn't get sick a lot. He does sleep with his mouth open, snores loudly, wakes himself up, has some speech problems, and has cavities from all the open-mouthed sleeping. And the doctor said they probably will not get smaller and will continue to be bothersome. Still it is surgery and I am uncertain. I know in the long-run it will allow him to breathe and sleep easier, but am worried about the whole surgery/recovery. I will definitely keep you little guy in my thoughts and wish him a speedy, pain-free, popsicle-filled recovery.

Go get yourself a copy of "Nobody's Fool" by Richard Russo (the movie is good, too, but it doesn't have the scene in it that I'm thinking of) and read it. A tonsillectomy is mentioned late in the book, and you'll get to meet Beryl Peoples along the way. And a hug for the little guy.

Poor things! I feel for him, and I feel for you - because it is so hard to have a little one who is sick - like you said, it's questionable how much he understands and how do you explain to a little guy that this will actually HELP? My son had tubes in his ears 3 different times, which is probably a lot easier than the adenoids/tonsils thing. I am sending you guys positive vibes!

Aw, poor little fella. Happy thoughts are going his way. Kids have a great capacity for forgetting unpleasant things, and concentrating on the important stuff, like new toys and ice cream. All I remember from the time I broke my arm at age 5 was how cool it was to have people write on my cast. Yet it must have hurt a lot, but I don't recall that at all.
Here's to his speedy recovery! And comfort to you and your husband while you wait it out.

I was his age when I had mine out--on Christmas Day! I remember that it was very interesting and that I adored the crazy straw my parents brought me. I have no memory of the pain, if that helps.
My best wishes are going out to your little big man and to you.

Aw man. Well - you gave him the best day-before ever! And all the ice cream he can eat might be a happy thing. I guess you'd want to get the kind without any lumpy stuff, though.
I wonder if foot surgery qualifies a person for ice cream? I don't think that it has any beneficial effect that I can think of. Well - calcium is always good.

poor little dude. I second the ice-cream suggestions, but also wouild like to suggest either a hotwater bottle or pack of froxen peas in his pillow (depending on outdoor temps). I find that helps when I get tonsillitis just because it feels nice on the back of my neck and stops me tensing with the pain.

Thank you, everybody. He's going to be fine. He's in bed now, jacked up on pain medication. We expect him to be feeling much better in a couple of days, and 100% in about two weeks. Thank you again.

Awwww, poor little bear. I'm sure he'll be feeling fine in no time. Kids are so resilient.
"Broccoli makes me strong." Hehehe. Sounds a bit like my five year old. If I'm trying to correct him in some fashion, or perhaps get him to put his shoes on, he'll often make a comment such as "Oh, I can't do that right now because I don't have my superhero powers."

I hope your little one is okay. I had my tonsillectomy when I was 21, and I was shocked at how much it hurt. They told me it hurts much less when you're little, and I hope that's true.
Love your Blog - keep it up!
