Part of being a feminist is supporting choice. If you choose to wear a frilly pink sari or nothing at all, well, that is your choice. I will admit talking about dignity would be difficult in pink frills, like preaching for peace wearing a bandolier. I am dying to find out how a sari can be frilly though.
And flea, the coding issue is in IE only, your site looks fine in firefox.

Well, yes. Except it isn't a choice, it's a uniform that only the women have to wear. The men can wear what they like, or so it seemed.

In honor of CTWhozit, I have been inspired! For as long as my attention holds, I will promote one product from the Honeysuckle Shop based on every post, here in the comments lounge.
This post made me think of Wet, a collection of erotica. Order it here: https://www.honeysuckleshop.com/M.../

And if that link doesn't work, and my links rarely work, go to http://www.honeysuckleshop.com and you can find the book in the library.

Damn! I just drove by Suckers yesterday and thought to myself, "Self, you have got to check that place out one of these days." Do you know if the store sustained much damage? (It was probably a candy Pall Mall left burning that started the fire.)
There's another culty veggie restaurant in town—Alice and Friends Vegetarian Cafe in Edgewater. They have the culty man on TV, but the vibe is a little less aggressively creepy. The food, though, I found to be a little weird. Pan-Asian with meat substitutes. UnChicken, Korean BBQ unmeat, etc. All I liked was the ladyfingers appetizer—something vague with a sweet, sticky sauces. My veggie friends love the entrees, but I find them as appetizing as Sri Chinmoy.
And hey! We're the same religion! Except I didn't grow up going to church. No use for this spirituality business, right?

Orange, they had all those meat substitutes, too. I never get them when I go out because I feed veggie burgers to the kids, and I'm not paying 6 bucks for a veg burger when an entire box costs me 3.50. I just can't. I can't tell whether it's my general religious aversion that made me creep out, or whether the place was just that creepy. Steve thought it was creepy, too, the one time he went in there, but he's just like me so I don't know.
Is it the same guy at alice & friends? Sri Chimroy?

Oh my gosh, we have one of these in San Francisco. I went into it one day and, while I was waiting for a table, I noticed dozens of hideous paintings lining the wall. When I asked the hostess what they were, she looked at me with shining vacant eyes and raptously declared them to be "now paintings" and pointed to the television.
The television showed an indian man sitting on a throne, bent over and painting on paper laid at his feet. Each painting took about 20 seconds. But what freaked me out was the small woman crouched at his side, just outside his line of site, removing the paper, cleaning up his spills, getting fresh pieces of paper, etc. while he indifferently dabbed paint on paper after paper. Totally creepy. I decided not to eat there. And, is it just me, but is there a pressure-cooker feeling in places like that? Maybe that's why the baby had a meltdown? I dunno. Great post!

I have a similar view of religion to you, but I still love the Hare Krishna restaurants. They have great vegetarian food and the cultishness isn't so in your face at normal meal times. I haven't yet been to the one in this city, though because it only has the big feasts following some kind of ceremony. My brother has one of their cookbooks, which is good too. You just have to skip over the parts about offering a portion up to krishna before you eat

Hi flea, I had a similar problem with my site and found that one of the items I was posting on the sidebar was too wide (thus pushing everything on the left down below the whole sidebar). You might try to reduce your wider sidebar items and see if that brings your posts back up to where they should be.

I lived two blocks from there for years before I bought a house in a forgotten corner of the city. When I first ate there a few years ago, looking for a breakfast place, I thought it was Krisha restaurant. I was soon corrected. The food was pretty good but the atmosphere was too creepy for mee too. After the third time, I decided it wasn't me and stopped eating there. I can't understand people's desire to devote thier life to following another human being. I noticed the women in saris while the men wore pants and shirts immediately. It was one of the things that clued me in that this wasn't a Krisha restaurant. Thanks for the links. Creepy indeed.

Flea, according to go-veggie.org, the Alice and Friends restaurant is hooked up with "Quan Yin meditation under master Ching Hai," which has the iffy URL of godsdirectcontact.org.
More importantly, we went to the Cold Stone Creamery on Halsted during Pride Fest on Saturday. I wanted to test out the singing thing, so I put a buck in the tip jar. The young woman at the register looked at me warily and asked with a note of dread in her voice, "You want me to sing for you?" She thanked me when I said no.

Oh YES! We DO have a Sri Chimnoy chain restaurant here in San Fran! I work two blocks away. I rarely sit in the restaurant to eat, but call ahead and get my food TO GO. Are the walls at your Sri Chimnoy restaurant painted to look like a cloudy sky?
The "neatloaf" rocks and so does the curry. I think that's how religious nuts are going to get us all, eventually. With good food.
The sari thing also drives me crazy. But the women wearing them are consistently nice to me and they also have senses of humor. I find this a good sign in cult members.

OMG, Suckers burned down? I hope the shop is repairable without major loss by the owner. I can't remember her name but she's nice as hell, and anyone who stocks Curly Wurly bars (the closest thing to the old Marathons) is a queen by my standards.
I'm glad they saved you. I'm sure the burnt violet-scented gum wouldn't be much good anyway.

I love Ananda Fuara in SF! Yes it's creepy, but as far as I know at least the male workers have to wear something cultily Indian as well. I think also in Berkeley the Hare Krishna temple will take anyone in and feed them yummy veggie stuff, with a relative minumum of proselytization. At least, they did when I was in more of a position to know a lot of high school age runaways in the bay area.
Oh man now I want a teriayki tempeh burger in the worst way. . .Hey Flea, come to SF with the kids and the husband and let us all descend on you for the Grand Veggie Restaurant tour! We can start at Cafe Gratitude and make fun of the menu item names!

flea, don't worry about it. I'm the exact opposite, I find that I'm fascinated by other religions than my own (drove my extremely religious aunt insane when she found out I was doing a report on Buddhism) but I would never push my spiritual beliefs on another. And you have a perfect right to be not religious.
I was brought up to respect other cultures and relgions and generally do unto others...blah, blah, blah.
That being said, I was creeped out just reading this. Seriously creeped out. Like yelling at the computer screen "flea, get out! Get out now(yes, I also yell at characters in horror movies to not go into the basement)! Run for your life!"
I've never run into anything like this but that could be because I'm not a vegetarian (although I am quite fond of vegetables, really, I am). I am assuming that most vegan restaurants are not like this, right?
Other than that, cool story. Reminded me of the fusion one.

BUT! here in denver there's a great vegetarian restaurant: watercourse foods. no agenda, other than meat-free cooking. if you're ever in denver, you should check it out - it's on 13th, between grant and sherman a few blocks from the capital building.

In St. Petersburg, Russia, there was this Hare Krishna (I think) restaurant where you didn't have to pay. It was a free-will offering restaurant. Is that a usual thing for the Krishnas?
The food was weird.

When I was in college, I dated a professor who was into Bhagwan Shree Rashneesh (yikes!) and Master Darshan Singh. I went with him to an ashram devoted to Singh, and I was blown away by all the pictures of the "Master" all over the place. I expected to see a picture of him on the milk carton in the fridge. The guy I was with asked me if I could feel the "Master's" presence at the ashram. I was snarky, and said of course I could - I couldn't go in a room that didn't have a huge portrait of him on the wall. I was bored stiff the whole time, and spent most of my alone time hanging out at a nearby pond and reading while he was meditating with all the other yahoos. I was not impressed. Suffice to say that the relationship died after two years, and he lost his college Head of Departmentship because he was dating me while I was a student. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Yeah, Frog...Dooce's comments bit the dust due to one or two idiots who just couldn't leave well enough alone and ended up ruining everything.
Evidently, these are the same people who struggle with the basic concept that "if you don't like something, that's fine. You are entitled to your opinion. This is, after all, a free country. However, don't keep coming back just to snark."
It's a shame people are so petty and clueless. I wish they would just go away and fling poo someplace else.

First of all: I've had the same heeby jeebies at Victory, but if you're into vegetarian brunch, it's definitely a good place to eat. It's packed on weekend mornings.
Second: I grew up in Disciples of Christ churches too, and I've never heard anyone else mention it by name before you. Problem with D.O.C. was, whether they church was liberal, conservative or fundamentalist was totally dependent on the minister. So if he/she left, you might find yourself suddenly surrounded by fundamentalists. And then you'd have to leave. Which we did. Twice. I have no idea what those places are like now, haven't been back in 20 years.

Oh, I'm so glad it wasn't just me. I seem to have lost that cheerfully hard-boiled city attitude of, "Well, the chai's good, and the wraps are only 5 bucks, so I don't care if it's boiled in the blood of babies."
JT - I think it was the apartment above Suckers that caught on fire, so the store should be okay, barring any possible water damage.

Back when I was in high school (cough*early-70's*cough) some Hare Krishna's opened a little sandwich shop near where I had my after-school job. They made an excellent fresh ground peanut butter, honey and alfalfa sprout sandwich on homemade wheat bread which I enjoyed greatly on my binge days. In those days, all kinds of crazy stories were circulating about HK's and how they kidnapped teenagers who they brainwashed and turned into zombie slave laborers selling pencils at the airport, so I was too freaked out to sit in there and eat even though it had a nice vibe: sitar music on the 8-track and lots of plants.

Incidentally, Check, Please! (on channel 11, Chicago PBS) has an episode with this restaurant. It was just on yesterday. You can't watch it on the website, but here is the link to the review: http://www.wttw.com/checkplease/
...#victorysbanner
None of the reviewers mentioned the culty-creepiness. One of them liked the peaceful atmosphere, and she didn't seem like she was going to join up anytime soon. One guy did sort of make a joke about the airport.
I have read that soy products like the fake meat is really unhealthy because of the phytoestrogens. From what they say, the only healthy soy is the traditional kind, like tofu or tempeh, which has been fermented. http://www.mercola.com/article/soy/#
Just mentioning it, in case anyone is interested.
