First off, thank's for the book plug, it looks like a worthwhile read.
I don't know if you can call the French "responsible" for WWI and II. I just get this image of Hitler jumping up and down and saying "pick me, pick me."
Again, with WWII, I think the answer to the "has it been worth it" question is a resounding YES.
As far as helping Saddam prior to the first Gulf War....so did we. Granted, we didn't do as much as the French, and I'm not defending their greedy actions, but we def. contributed a great deal to their fight against Iran. We also have our fair share of historical mistakes. We can only hope that our leaders learn from them and apply those lessons while governing.

If the French had been able to defend themselves, the US never would have gotten involved.
And I would recommend Allies in addition Woodward's Plan of Attack.
