Gravatar "...and we get rape statistics thrown at us at every turn."

Isn't that the truth.

I asked the person in charge of our latest "don't rape people" fraternity session if I could excuse myself by voluntarily being neutered. The person didn't respond too favorably to my query, but I didn't care - I'm sick of being treated and patronized as a potential criminal who can't tell right from wrong without sensationalized statistics and raw emotionalism.

Gravatar (Yawn.) Another white male whinging now that everything isn't going his way.

Gee, how DARE they confront you with rape statistics!? How uncomfortable that must make you feel, poor baby. Of course, not as uncomfortable as the women who have to watch their back ALL the time walking about campus.

Gravatar If people were really concerned about female college students being raped, they would allow said students to carry weapons. On most colleges, guns, knives, and even batons and pepper spray are banned or tightly restricted. Ergo, most women are left with only brute strength to defend themselves.

Hmm. Something doesn't make sense here…

Gravatar (Double yawn) Eric resorts to the same old liberal "angry white man" accusation without looking at the truth of the problem. Try using your brain, Eric. It's there for a purpose.

Society has relegated men to second class citizenship in many ways. I noted some of the problems men face on June 29, 2005.

Gravatar Wait, there is a simple answer to the rape problem.

No woman should be allowed to walk about without an approved chaperone.

Put men in charge of women's saftey.

Gravatar The gun idea is probably better.

What are the odds women will go for that one either?

Here is another: get admissions to only recruit six foot tall 200 lb. bull dyke lesbians.

Another: brothels run by the student government. Student government profits (huge). The women profit and learn valuable skills. Men get relieved of excess hormones.

===========================

There are reasons Victorians and Arabs have rules about women.

================

I like this take: "God made all Men, Samuel Colt made them equal."

If women want equality they are going to have to learn to defend themselves or revert to male dominance.

Ideas are easier to change than nature.

Gravatar Whoa .... Eric, what are you talking about? What is your justification that innocent, non-criminal males need their concept of their own sexuality constantly criminalized? The behavior of criminals is not affected by preaching to the non-criminals.

Duh.

Man, I hated college. It gets a lot better after when everyone has to either get a job or marry someone who has one.

Gravatar The logic behind this statement is bizarre:

"How uncomfortable that must make you feel, poor baby. Of course, not as uncomfortable as the women who have to watch their back ALL the time walking about campus."

We all agree that it is very bad that women feel unsafe at times on campus. So the remedy for this is to make men uncomfortable? What am I missing?

Gravatar To quote Denis Leary, "Life sucks? Get a f---ing helmet." I'm getting sick of conservatives whining (whinging? Are you English?) about how hard campus life is. I graduated in 1998 from a very liberal Massachusetts college and my friends and I took it as a badge of honor to meet our ideological opponents with good humor and better arguments. Grow a pair and keep in mind that 2/3rds of students just want to get along, get drunk, and get laid and will turn into Republicans as soon as they receive a paycheck. They may not stand up for you but they don't give a s--t about liberalism either.

Gravatar way to go!

Gravatar I definately agree with allowing students, especially women, to carry weapons, currently banned in the dorms. I actually suggested this to a friend who is taking a Women's Studies course this semester when she needed an idea. She replied that though she agreed (she is conservative) she wanted to not fail the class.

Gravatar "Of course, not as uncomfortable as the women who have to watch their back ALL the time walking about campus."

This is such a ludicrous statement. I'm a recent female college graduate. I did not have to watch my back ALL the time while walking about campus. Good Lord. The only time I had to watch my back was when I was irresponsible and had to walk to the library or the art building at midnight by myself because I waited until the last minute to do my work. And even then there are all sorts of campus services who will take you to said buildings and away from them. Your attitude makes me think you view us as children.

Gravatar Oh please. The persecuted group in power thing is geting a little old. When there is a black female president and all the congressmen are women, then we can talk.

though I agree people need to be treated equally. But maybe equally means white men get treated like the rest of us for a while. Shocker. Equality doesn't necessarily mean that everyone gets it good, it means everyone gets it the same, and right now it sucks, for just about everyone.

Maybe you should have gone to a less liberalartsywomensrightsy school. There are alternatives.

Gravatar Group in power? The discussion here is about colleges and universities which are one of the last bastions of left-wing liberalism. It must be fun to be liberal. Then you never have to worry about pesky things like facts and reason.

Gravatar It must be fun to be making assumptions about other people's political beliefs based on nothing at all.

Gravatar The attention paid to rape in colleges is far out of proportion to its incidence. If *rape* is the problem, resources should go not to colleges, but to the places of highest incidence, usually poorer inner-city neighborhoods. Why doesn't this happen? One might draw the conclusion that the real object is to demoralize white men.

the snob wrote: "To quote Denis Leary, 'Life sucks? Get a f---ing helmet.' I'm getting sick of conservatives whining (whinging? Are you English?) about how hard campus life is."

Listening to conservatives "whining" sucks? Get a f---ing helmet.

Gravatar Wow, that deteriorated quickly.

Re: Lecturing men about rape. It's stupid. It's like those signs that say "Keep out of the flower bed". Anyone who is inconsiderate enough to walk through a flower bed is not going to be deterred by a sign. In the same way, those silly rape lectures aren't going to make a rapist say, "well, now that I know it's that bad, I won't do it. I grew up under a rock and thought women liked it."

Re: The rest of it. Apparently some people are laboring under the delusion that the purpose of attending college is to get an education. It's not. The purpose is to get a degree so one can get a better job that requires a degree but is in no way related to what was studied to get it (there are a few exceptions, but not many).

Gravatar Unfortunately, for all but the hard sciences (and somewhat even there), mrsizer is correct.

The real problem is that society has decided that silly pieces of paper from silly places have mrit in detrmining how well one can work.

Fix that, and we don't have to WORRY about silly people like college administrators anymore, as there won't be any money attached to it.
