"Why Bush couldn't have done this in the first place I don't know."

Not to sound too conpiratorial, but maybe Bush wanted to, but felt pressure to nominate a woman. By nominating Meiers, who certainly wasn't the MOST qualified, maybe he assumed she'd get rejected or step down and he could put up "Scalito," yet another white man, without anyone saying much anything (at least from the diversity standpoint).

That's all I'll say at this point - it should be interesting to see what comes out about him.

An interesting point, ands one that occured to me during my last class. Bush can now say "I tried to appoint a woman, and she withdrew."

This on top of the earlier revelation that some of the top female short-listers asked not to be considered.

Very good point overall, Mike. This one will be fun to watch, and I'm throwing my hat in the ring.

Bernake's a great choice, and (Sc)Alito is an excellent pick in the Scalia mold.

Actually, I do Hube. I realize that overturning Roe v. Wade would mean the case would be thrown back to individual states to decide. I don't see New York or California banning abortion, but other states, yes. I remember reading somewhere that 87% of the counties in the country don't have abortion clinic anyway. That statement can be qualified in a million ways, but I just find it odd that doctors won't open up clinics in some of these counties strictly because they're afraid of being murdered by right-wing Chrisitian loons.

As Bill Maher says, I think it's time women stock up on their abortions now. Get 'em now while the getting's still good.

Enough, Hube. Enough have been killed. Without doing any research, I'd venture to say at least four or five have been murdered by Christian loons. I think Eric Rudolph is one of them.
