A worthy topic indeed. I'd like to see all the d-halls go to the Towers option, where you can do a block meal plan. Its so much better - I can go on days when I expect the food to be better (though realistically this does not break up the monopoly).
What should be done is that you should be allowed to use your UD card to purchase food from shops on Main St., and the the University would just reimburse those places for the full (or more realistically a discounted) amount. The students win, the Main St. stores win, and UD doesn't really lose - or do they? Where does all that money we pay for meals go? There are obviously a lot of costs in producing the wide variety of foods that they do, but most of the staff is either min. wage or work study, with a few real chefs thrown in.
Def. a case where more competition would be a great thing.
The dining halls also seem to have a penchant for fish dishes. Yuck
I agree with you about the monopoly the university has with the dining halls and food service. This is the case in other areas as well. All sporting events, concerts,hospitals and even some offices have only one food service and people are forced to either buy the "stuff" they offer or not eat. It seems to me, that some food service companies have established a monopoly with businesses and corporations and are reaping the rewards at our expense. I for one, would like a choice of food and prices when I go to a hockey game but that just is not going to happen. Hey, how about a Big Mac and fries along with the game?
