"Conservatives here must draw on the foundations of Goldwater and Reagan"
Indeed, and by following Reagan, they can then massively shift "government dependency" from the public sector to the private sector. That way "welfare" can be given to ultra-wealthy corporations who deserve it more than moms, dads and children.

Wow, Dana, way to be tolerant, as well as way to ignore the true nature of conservatism, which is not to have "welfare," but to trust the individual to know what is right for his/ herself. Ah, yes, the government must know far better than
"moms, dads, and children" what they need.
Hey, ever think that government is more the problem than the solution? "Welfare" has existed since FDR, and it's only grown. The number of people "needing" it has increased, not decreased, most likely as a direct result of its existence.
Hmmm...seems like it's only another form of slavery...keeping people beholden to a government bureaucracy...
'Tis exactly the problem with you short-sighted liberals...you can't see beyond the immediate benefit to your vote count...however dishonest that count may be...

Indeed, I think, unlike FDR, Reagan said that the goal of welfare was to eliminate, as far as possible, its very existence.
Quite unlike the Democrats, who rely on it to keep minorities enslaved.
