I think that, like most socialists, they were not rebelling against government itself, but a government that they do not control. Taxman could certainly be adopted by conservatives as a "decentralized government" folk song, but one must also remember that socialists engage in economic sophistry, whereby everything essential can be provided (by the elites/enlightened) for free ("...to each according to his needs, blah blah blah").
Hey, I love The Beatles, and I don't doubt that they love(d) America, but I would never elect any of them to public office. If you listen Lennon's Imagine, I think it's pretty clear he's a socialist ("No religion... [B]rotherhood of man... [I]magine there's [sic] no countries...").
