You hate it?

Gravatar Yes. It is a holiday with purely political motives, undermining the spirit of unity and racial togetherness in America.

Gravatar Wasn't Christmas formed to counter the druidic holiday, I thought Jesus was born in the middle of spring, I could be wrong on this though.

Gravatar Roman. But Christmas, for its pagan roots, has good intentions, which is to celebrate peace, not seperatism.

Gravatar We actually have no definite "date" or season as to when Jesus was born. In fact, in my studies, I don't recall ever coming across anything that suggested any particular time coinciding with his birth. I think you're confusing his birth with his death, which we know for a fact is in spring because of Passover.

Gravatar Let's not get into a Christmas argument again - this is a post about Kwanzaa, afterall. I disagree that it is a holiday about division, however; it is a festival intended to unite a people who shared a common experiance of oppression and discrimination, centered on values accepted by that culture within our larger American culture. While I don't think it should be considered a holiday on par with Christmas or Hanukkah, holy-days of major religions, I think it deserves respect as a celebration of pride among people who, for so many years, were denied their dignity at the hands of the majority race within a country based on notions of liberty, equity, and freedom.

Gravatar I don't know of any other holiday that excludes people by race alone.

Gravatar I don't think anyone would try to stop you if you wanted to celebrate Kwanzaa. Besides, I don't exactly see a reason for African Americans or American Indians to celebrate Columbus day.

Gravatar I seriously doubt that Columbus Day was created to specifically seperate Italian-Americans the way Kwanzaa was. And Kwanzaa is much more harmfull to national unity than Columbus Day.

Gravatar "Let's not get into a Christmas argument again - this is a post about Kwanzaa, afterall. I disagree that it is a holiday about division, however; it is a festival intended to unite a people who shared a common experiance of oppression and discrimination"

You are correct. And for this reason it is surprising that Ryan doesn't hate Passover.

Gravatar Actually, Dana, I celebrate passover with my father's family every year. I do not see Passover as a celebration or holiday designed to seperate people more than any other religious celebration.

Kwanzaa, on the other hand, is not religious, and is intended to unite blacks...against whites. No one (or very few) people in Africa celebrate Kwanzaa, while every Jew in Israel celebrates Passover in some way.

Gravatar Wow, Dana. That was low, not to mention a very unfair comparison of the two. You should apologize for making such a slanderous statement. (Or is it libelous?)
