People who try to approach Holocaust denial in a more "academic" manner are even more dangerous than those who throw around empty rhetoric. This has been fueled by psudo-scholars such as David Irving who make their livelyhood spreading these lies that have been picked up in the Arab world, where they are received with open arms by anti-Semites. The spread of anti-Semitism in Europe, including England, is also unfortunate...while I think some of it has to do with immigration from the Arab world, that is not the whole story. Governments need to do more to make sure their citizens do indeed "never forget."

Where do you think the "justifications" for the rhetoric come from? The rhetoric fuels the 'academics' and vice versa. To say otherwise is hopelessly naive.

I agree fully - I was only saying that people who attempt to present it as something worthy of academic debate pose a grave danger, because people who do not know any better think they have done legitimate reseach and may be more convince than by listening to some whack-job rant. Of course, the unifying anti-Semitism that drives both is a serious concern as well.
As I post this, I see Ariel Sharon is fighting for his life from a stroke. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family tonight, and with the State of Israel in this time of potential turbulance.

Oh yeah. He said it.
"EHRAN, Iran -
Iran's president said Thursday he hoped for the death of Israeli Prime Minister
Ariel Sharon, the latest anti-Israeli comment by a leader who has already provoked international criticism for suggesting that
Israel be "wiped off the map."
"Hopefully, the news that the criminal of Sabra and Chatilla has joined his ancestors is final," President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was quoted as saying by the semiofficial Iranian Students News Agency."
Sigh. Hopefully no one rounds around that Maypole.

I find it scary that Pat Robertson has more or less come out and said something similiar, saying that God smote Sharon for dividing God's land. Certainly no where near the level of lunacy of the Iranian president (well, at least he doesn't have nukes), but still kind of scary nevertheless. Yet again, Pat Robertson's perverted version of Christianity insults me.
