"The Democratic party as a whole appears hell-bent on scuttling this deal."

Huh? If anything, I remember Republicans making the first moves on this case. What Geraghty has done is played partisan politics with an issue about which 90% of Americans (both Dems and Repubs) agree. What a dumb editorial.

What Geraghty does, essentially, in the editorial is to only highlight democrat apprehension. About as fair and balanced as FOX News, if you ask me.

Gravatar actually, the Dems did make the first move. It wasn't for a day or so that Republicans picked up on the opposition. They just made a bigger stink about it.

Gravatar I'd buy into this as some intelligence sharing operation if Bush had known about it. I do agree that the initial reporting over this was shotty and innaccurate, but we should be use to this by now. I don't see how media problems can be pinned on the Democrats, however, especially as Republicans have quickly jumped on the bandwagon while Jimmy Carter has sided with Bush. Its simply lame to make this a Dem-Republican issue. The security of our ports is more complex and, frankly, too important for that sort of thing.

Gravatar "The security of our ports is more complex and, frankly, too important for that sort of thing."

True, but I don't see how our security is at stake.

Gravatar Yep, the same Dems who proclaim that immigration reforms and strengthening border security are anti-Hispanic jumped at the chance to accuse the president of not being anti-Arab enough. The GOPers, to their discredit, wet their pants at the thought of not being perceived as strong on port security.

Gravatar I think you make a good point, G-Rex. However, if any good comes out of this thing, I think it highlights the fact that our ports were not secure to begin with. Realistically, we need to start there before we worry too much about what effect a business deal will have on them. This should have been an issue since Sept. 12, 2001 or even before. Should we trust the Chinese or the Brits any more than the folks from UAE? Realistically, we do need to be more consistent at the very least, because to single out an Arab country, while perhaps based on what occurred, nevertheless sends the wrong message to those we are trying to win over.

Definatly a valid point worth considering.
