The irony for the Republicans is that the two candidates who I think would be shoe-ins for the general election (unless Buba can run for a third term) probably won't make it through the primary process. I don't think experiance would be a problem for Guiliani, simply because of his 9-11 performance and his record of "cleaning up" NYC. However, by 2008, 2001 might not have the impact it did this year, so he's beatable.
Allen and Romney are both strong candidates, and on the whole I think the Republicans have some good people to choose from.
The Dems need someone fresh - Bayh, Warner, or Richardson are my favorites so far, though I do like Joe Biden. He's my sentimental favorite, but a red state governor is hard to resist.

After what Feingold is doing today, he's out in my book. He's introducing legislation to censure the President, essentially giving him a slap on the wrist for the "domestic" spying program. Isn't there something better we could be doing with taxpayer dollars? Clearly a move for 2008. Not saying he won't run, but if he is the dem. nominee he certainly is already written off in my book.
Good post, thanks for all the insight.

Unfortunatly, most do not realize the questionable legality of the spying program and have bought into Bush's line about it being necessary for their protection. As a result, this move will make Feingold look like a radical, at least to Republicans.

Ryan, how long did that take you? Nice work. I like your pick for Barbour for VP, though he could probably use a little time with Hucakbee to slim down some. For the top of the ticket who knows. I can also see Bayh or Warner doing well if the media will stop their Hillary fest. Of course I think all of this depends on a few factors that no one can really control....Iran/Oil shock and avian flu and their affects on the economy. Whoever reacts best to those things wins the election. Just my 10 cents...

Allen for Republicans, at least for now, is my pick.
It'll be HRC, but Warner is probably the best choice they have, even if I can't stand him. The funny thing is I know absolutely no one who voted for him, and I know A LOT of Virginians. And the 11,000 jobs he added- none in the southwest portion of the state, and the rest of the state complains about too much growth. Plus, the man's never seen a tax he didn't like. When the Gov. of TN wanted to tax goods bought in VA at the TN tax rate (which is twice that of VA), Warner agreed even though it's a flagrant violation of interstate commerce laws. He'd tax air if he could.
I think Allen will be the GOP pick in 08, and HRC the Dems' pick, which is good news for the Republicans, not because Allen is going to be popular everywhere, but because there isn't a snowball's chance in hell that Hillary could carry a single southern state, and the Democrats cannot win if they can't appeal to at least some southerners. It's mathematically possible, but it's unrealistic.
