Huh, seems the Pentagon has decided not to deploy the 2d Brigade of the 1st Infantry Division from Germany to Iraq as previously planned. (That's a reduction of about 3,500 men.) They're still deploying a brigade from the 34th ID (Minnesota ANG) and planning to rotate in 3 active brigades, but it looks like the only way for Ryan and the Kid to go to war would be to join the Iraqi Army.
In other news, Barry McCaffrey (a Clinton general and drug czar) says things are going much better for the Iraqi Army and police than he thought, and the new Prime Minister is cleaning up the Interior Ministry, whose troops have been complicit in death squad-type actions against Sunnis.
