Gravatar A passing pickup truck drew loud cheers by flying a Confederate flag with the motto "The South Will Rise Again."

They do know Jersey's in the North, right?

Gravatar Yeah...at least it is South Jersey...

Gravatar Though general Lee might be seen as charismatic and the confederate flag as a different and thus coll national symbol, one would have to remember what the confedarcy stood for.

It stood for slavery, rigidity of mentality and for the maintenance of priviledges. I hope that intolerant and arrogant south never rises again.

Immigrants are a bit like slaves, free to work ther families out of hunger but not for the same benefits.

It is rather ironic to hope the south would rise to ship slaves back now when it tried to keep slaves the first time arround.

Gravatar Actually, Lucio, by the time the Civil War came around, there were more slaves in the North than in the South. The South was about states' rights and maintaining federalism. And for such an upright people, the North did one hell of a job promoting intolerance and using Southerners as low wage workers, not to mention how they eliminated state control of natural resources in the process. Just examine the history of coal mining in Appalachia if you don't believe me.

Oh, never mind, you probably can't be bothered to learn anything about Northern aggression. It wouldn't play into your intolerant mindset too well.

Oh, by the way, it's "privileges," not "priviledges." Southerners at least know how to spell.

-Proud Southerner

Gravatar "there were more slaves in the North than in the South." - This is simply not true, unless you are trying to make Fitzhugh's argument that those working in the capitalist system were "wage slaves."

Either way, I would thing that associating immigration restriction with the south and, implicitly, slavery and "privileges" or "priviledges," if you prefer, is both ironic and an ineffective way of promoting your cause and disassociating it with racism.

Gravatar That should be "think" and not "thing." I'm in a border state, so I only half know how to spell .

Gravatar Regardless of our disagreement regarding the civil war, if you are for equal rights you are right to be proud.

I would not rush to associate myself with the confedaracy untill I was sure it stood for the same values, though.

Your distaste for intolerant mindsets is certainly in the right track and your cheap spelling shot not so much.

P.S. I would never judge all southerners by the confederacy leadership or even by you, so I appreciate if you don't judge all northeners by me.

Gravatar I suspect the coonfederate flag was cheered for being an Anti-Liberal symbol and as a symbol of rebellion as many of these anti illegal imigration protestors are rebelling agianst a federal government that is not enforcing it's own laws.

I doubt you will find much pro-slavery sentiment in New Jersey (or anywhere else in America).
