Very clean and much easier to read on a dying monitor or a dimly lit laptop.

You may have to resize Ting the the DCBA logos to work well, but I guess you knew that.

I like the look. The banner graphic is nice, but you might want to blend it in with rest of the visual look of the blog. Right now, it's a big black block that sticks out of a field of white.

I like black on white blogs myself (obviously since my blog is like that too). Contrast is a good thing. Some people don't though.

I only realized now that our designs are similar...any tips on how to make the banner better?

My banner sits on a similarly colored background which keeps it from looking like a block a field of white. Since your banner is black, I would use some sort of trim detail on the bottom edge to transition into the white of the page. Otherwise the black/white shift might be a bit too abrupt.
