Despite my obvious Irish-ness, my maternal great grandparents came right of the boat from Krakau in the late 19th century, to Philadelphia. Shortly after this they settled in Wilmington (Southbridge), to begin our family. In 1917 my great grandmother Ana (Wawruch) gave birth to my grandfather Stanley (Karmanski) ("Stosh"). Most of my Polish family ancestors, including my grandfather, as well as my Irish side of the family, now rest here in Wilmington in Cathedral Cemetery.
The Poles are truly a wonderful people as are the countless Polish-Americans. Poland produced perhaps the greatest world leader in the 20th century in Karol Wojtyła, forever known to us as John Paul II. Poland led Europe to freedom from communist enslavement and tyranny.
The Poles are a people of incredible perseverance and a truly inspiring work ethic that has never flagged an iota either here or in the home country.
My Polish roots are a great source of personal pride, but also something I happily share with many others to whom I gladly tip my hat and offer my warmest regards.
Thanks for offering recognition to these great people.
