I don't think that is what he means. Besides since when is he a leading democrat?

I really don't see what other meanings you could realistically take out of that. It reflects exactly what he said.
John Kerry is one of the top three most easily recognizable people in the Democratic Party, next to Hillary and Dean. They did nominate him for President in 2004, after all.

The Corner covered this pretty extensively today. There's no way for Kerry to "nuance" his way out of this whopper. What -- does he still think there's a draft or what??

He said something stupid, he needs to suck it up and say "that's not what I meant, but if I offended any of our brave soldiers, I'm sorry" and go on from there to discuss the real problems of Republican leadership on the Iraq issue. I didn't vote for Kerry in the primary the first time around, and I wouldn't vote for him this time, either. I think he will find little success among his fellow Democrats.
Also, I find it funny Republicans are so willing to attack what people say:
"Our enemies never stop thinking of ways to harm our country and neither do we."
"If this were a dictatorship, it'd be a heck of a lot easier...just as long as I'm the dictator."
Hmm, maybe its time for Republicans to come up with a "Kerryisms calandar" to answer the Bushisms calandars...

In 1972, as he ran for the House, he was less apologetic in his comments about the merits of a volunteer army. He declared in the questionnaire that he opposed the draft but considered a volunteer army "a greater anathema."
"I am convinced a volunteer army would be an army of the poor and the black and the brown," Kerry wrote. "We must not repeat the travesty of the inequities present during Vietnam. I also fear having a professional army that views the perpetuation of war crimes as simply 'doing its job.'
"Equally as important, a volunteer army with our present constitutional crisis takes accountability away from the president and put the people further from control over military activities," he wrote.
