Good question as to why it wasn't done sooner. My best guess is that Bush and his staff felt that the best way to fight off the Mediots' attacks was to stand their ground and hold fast to the idea that they were doing a good job in Iraq. Obviously the MSM spins the war against the Bush Admin, but that hardline stance covering Rumsfeld's back probably cost them some numbers in this mid-term election.
Why wasn't it done earlier? Because it would've been an admission of failure.
And doing it now isn't somehow?
Well more than half of Americans now know it's a failure. So the admission doesn't really matter.
Actually, Gates was offered the National Intelligence Director position, but turned it down. Negroponte was the second or third choice. One of these days I'm going to work out in detail how the Director of Central Intelligence used to be the top intel post that the NID is now, but got downgraded to parity with the FBI chief, leading to the turf wars that persist to this day. (Short answer is Hoover, but there's more to the story.)
Anyway, I'm not sure I buy into the Gringrich viewpoint that ousting Rummy much earlier would have helped the GOP headcount substantially, especially since the Dems and MSM would have labeled it a desperate and cynical stunt. I would have been more disappointed in the president if he'd sacrificed Rumsfeld like an Aztec virgin to placate the gods of politics.
Bush helped Dems defeat Conservatives so he could push through his father NEW World Order agenda. THE FENCE ACROSS MEXICO that BUSH fought against will not be built. BOB Gates who used to work for Daddy Bush as head of CIA will do what the father wants. Gates just left the James Baker "Iraq Commision". The plan is to divide Iraq into 3 states. Joe Biden is pushing this " solution". Why do you think the Dems have take impeachment off the table. Because they now like Bush & Dick Cheney. Nancy Peloci's father was the Mayor of Balitmore and connected with the Mafia during the same time John Kenndy was assasinated & BUSH senior was with the CIA. Connect the dots...
