Ryan, excellent, humble, thoughtful analysis. Welcome back. I tend to agree, not necessarily that conservatism is right, but that the American people more rejected the culture of corruption than moving into the Democratic camp. The way I see it, the Dems have two years to prove they at least have ideas that could put translated into concrete policies if Bush would allow them to. Hopefully, our leadership realizes this as well. While I'd like to see accountability and hearings, they cannot let that distract them from policy. If they do, this tenure will be short lived.
The Wharton thing still kind of blows my mind. I think the negative advertising by both candidates hurt him most in the end. If Republicans had try to just humanize him instead of turning him into Javert chasing a world full of Jean Valjeans they would have been better off (Sorry for the Les Mis reference). Negative just doesn't work in Delaware all that well. Hopefully Wharton will get a second chance if Beau tries for a different position later on. I truly believe he deserves it.
There was a big difference between the "negative" adds from each campaign.
Wharton's add truthfully pointed out Biden's lack of experiance.
Biden's adds told lies about Wharton, lies so blatent that even the NJ called him on it. But the adds kept running.
It is a shame that good Republicans, such as Rick Santorum...

Santorum was a decent politician, but he got screwed by a Governor who is immensely popular. Rendell even got my normally conservative brother to vote for him. So whatever he's been doing up in PA translated into a Santorum loss. Don't forget that the Casey name in PA is nearly as recognizable as the Biden name down here.
But Jason, you're deluded if you think Santorum played any role in the Biden/Wharton race.
Does anyone think Beau Biden loses if his nickname (rather than his given name) is listed on the ballot?
Santorum lost because of the strong anti-incumbent tide in PA (CleanSweep), as well as the success of the reinvented Ed Rendell.
