There are two things I am most depressed about due to the results of this election. First, losing the Senate will make it much more difficult to appoint a Roberts/Alito-like justice. The second is that John Bolton wont be UN ambassador. He is probably one of the smartest, most competent of all of Bush's appointees. F-ing Chaffee, I am glad that liberal crack with an R next to his name is gone.

is Bolton drawing a salary?

a radio story today covered the Chafee comment and ended by saying that the Pres. could recess appoint him again, but that he would not recieve a salary.

Gravatar Nice clear thinking, Linc. You'd think the UN Ambassador had the power to craft foreign policy all on his own, rather than convey the policies of the administration. You might as well demand Tony Snow's resignation! I guess what we need at the UN is someone who can be trusted to conduct sleazy back-room deals with guys like Kojo Annan and cuddle up to thugocrats without triggering his gag reflex.

Gravatar Personally, I think Bolton has done a decent job so far and deserves a second chance. Maybe if Bush waited, some of the more moderate Democrats would add their support and he would find himself with an easier go of it.

Gravatar Mike, John McCain said approximately the same thing on Meet the Press this morning.

Gravatar That said, its the idea that he is trying to sneak this through before the new Congress takes effect is shady at best and a bad indication as far as his ability to work bipartisanly as will be needed for ANYTHING to be done the next couple of years. I guess we'll see.
