I remember reading a story about a Catholic who asked their pastor how to promote Catholic values in elections. The pastor responded: "Don't vote for Catholic candidates."
Sadly, that's still true.
In spite of your disclaimer, I think its dangerous to pick one issue over the others as you do; issues of care for the poor, war and peace, charity, and the death penalty all involve Christian (including Catholic) values. I think the way the parties break down in the present system, people with strong religous feelings and beliefs have to choose which among them they care the most about and support a candidate accordingly. Catholics split fairly evenly last election; certainly the life issue is at play, but there are other mitigating factors that cannot and should not be ignored with a disclaimer.

First, the abortion issue is a lot easier to analyze because there are two firm sides most of the time. No candidate is poverty, but their ideas on how to fight it are different.
Likewise, I can't imagine a politician advocating war except when necessary (the trouble is all in the details of what necessary means).

Again, the disclaimer was to make the analysis much easier to see, and a lot of candidates haven't really disseminated all of their opinions yet.
I'm against the death penalty, but I don't think I know any presidential candidate's stance on it right now.
