It's true; both Clinton and McCain are engaged in populist pandering on this issue. I'd even agree with Obama that the gas tax revenue is needed for infrastructure building, but the fact that Congress keeps loading up transportation bills with massive pork programs cuts the legs out from under this position.

Cutting this tax just isn't a grand idea when the federal government is already broke and the infrastructure that it supports is poor. While we do need to cut out much of the pork, the basic principle stands.
