Gravatar The reality may lie somewhere in between. Both McCain and Hillary had a surge; neither was wholly independents. McCain actually had more Republican support this time than in 2000. Hillary had stronger Democratic support than did Obama. Women voters also seemed to surge for her. Looking back historically, New Hampshire has a fierce independent streak - and a tendency, when the nomination is in doubt, to be wrong. We'll see what happens this year.

Looking at the calander, if things remain close, we may be dealing with post-Feb. 5th states coming into play, or even the recently uncharted area of things being undecided heading into the convention (don't forget the "Super" delegates!!). At least we political junkies have something to do for a while now. .
