Gravatar I like the idea that it'll make our generation step up to the plate and mature a bit. A lot of us already have, especially those serving in Iraq.

My problem with compulsory national service has two parts.

1. The libertarian in me says that it isn't right to force people to serve. People should be free to do whatever they want with their lives, regardless of what that is. Also, it starts to lean towards the fascist idea of forcing people to be proud of their country, something I think people should be, but on their own accord.

2. I don't think we could find enough uses for people without displacing many people from jobs. To have people build/repair highways, work in medicine as assistants and serve in the military would cost a lot for the government and they'd do significantly less than the private sector would.
