Interesting post - besides being artificially cheaper, I believe corn is also easier and less labor-intensive to produce. With all of these factors combined, I think we better learn to enjoy our chemicals.
Of course, my thought is this; if they can make all these modifications to make sweeter cheaper, why can't they make it healthier also? Vitamins can't cost that much to add into these ingredients in high-sugar drinks.

I'm not entirely sure about this, but it seems to me that our corn/sugar policy is hurting places like Brazil more than it is helping us.

While that may be true, our farm policy is about more than just raw economics - its about preserving a way of life, the Jeffersonian ideal of an agrarian society. I'm not arguing if this is right or wrong - personally my feelings are mixed - but I think it is def. an emotional factor that will be difficult to overcome for anyone wishing to change our policies.

I am totally unopposed to limited subsidies directed at family farms. In fact, I'm kinda for it.
I don't see how giving money to companies like ADM preserve that way of life.

Agreed - some common sense combined with some heart would go a long way in reforming our farming policy. I think its just a lobby powerful and wealthy enough that both sides are afraid to mess with it too much.

Sadly, I don't think it will change any time soon, and the new farm bill is an indication of that.

You want to know what's KILLING US??It's the HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP. A CHEMICAL that is labeled FALSELY as a sugar!! It is a sugar like rubbing alcohol is a vodka!! HFCS is a poison that has been used as a cheaper sugar substitute. The FDA NEVER TESTED IT!! Watch King Corn DVD. The cornsyrup industries would NOT let anyone in the manufacturers! WHY?? Becuase they do not want the public to see that it's a CHEMICAL!! Do not eat foods with HFCS!! Google it and READ the information! This is why MY MOM died of Pancreatic Cancer at age 36 and she was normal weight, active and lived a CLEAN life, no booze or ever any cigs, or drugs (a suzy homemaker). The corn industry does NOT want you to know the truth and the FDA does not give a crap. The FDA is PAID by the corn industry!!!
