woo hoo! I've got a girlfriend who's doing a 24 hour exam who wants me to get the fuck out of my own house (who would've thought that me trying to instigate conversation with her every couple of minutes would be destracting?), and a couple of "yeah, that movie's ok" recommendations from friends, but i think you've tipped the scales to Dendy's favour!

Tex and Henry,
Yes I really recommend this movie.
You will want to find scientists and give them big hugs for being so cute.
Also you will want to do some really simple and hopefully profound experiments.

You are fucking joking.
I would llike to do the simple experiment to see whether film producers heads will go through wooden planks.

If the next time I see you you are speaking in a stupid accent and sharing the wisdom about universal love gained from channelling a 35000 year old spirit warrior, do not expect me to be polite.
I might download it just so I can say Ive seen it, but those fugging charalatans wont be getting a cent of my money.

"What really cool ideas?"
Taking drugs. The idea that quantum physics is a bunch of made up stuff. Placebo effects. Ideas about addiction. The Carribean Indians not being able to see Columbus' ships (I haven't checked this one out in any detail, but it is extraordinarily interesting.)
So, you've seen it or not?
Having that woman in it was intrinsically funny I thought.

However. The whole thing is propaganda for the Ramtha cult, and thus, worthless (at best).

So, how many of the scientists are Ramtha cultists?
Only the woman is identified as Ramtha.

##### Spoilers and general Fun Reduction Ahead ########
Since this has been a red rag to Amanda (of Flopearedmule fame), she's gone off and found some useful links about who the people are:
http://skeptico.blogs.com/
skepti...the_bleep_.html and the links at the bottom of the page especially http://www.skeptic.com/eskeptic1...ic10-01-
04.html
"David Albert is a professor and the director of the Philosophical Foundations of Physics program at Columbia University. He says the film completely misrepresented his views."
David Albert is the only talking head in the movie who isn't a member of the Ramtha cult.
I am happy to say that he was my favourite. Mostly because he is what I imageine my mate Rob (coincidentally Amanda's brother-in-law) will be at that age. So enthusiastic, you can't but want to give him a great big hug. And perhaps a new jumper.
1) So, is the movie essentially an advertisment for the Ramtha cult?
Yes. Absolutely.
2) Do I think this really matters? Not really.
3) Does Amanda? "Sorry if I sounded harsh, but those people really shit me." We'll take that as a yes. And keep her away from the edged weapons.
Amanda's position is reinforced by the Ramtha cult's attitude to disabled children and homosexuality and some other fairly basic stuff.
Reading that myself, yes, they should probably be exterminated with extreme predudice, but since it wasn't in the film I think it's inadmissable.
Amanda: "Ramthas a chick. Well, JZ Knight is a chick, I believe Ramtha is/was a bloke because I read where he chose a woman to come back as because he didnt want to perpetuate the myth of God as male and thus be part of the universal subjugation of women. How nice of him."
Look, if they are a real cult they'll eventually declare physical forms to be not real and will commit mass suicide.
The talking heads are only introduced during the end credits of the film. This is one of the ideas I think is cool. Why? Because the film was about what reality is, and the viewer is naturally going to assume that the talking heads are all experts in their field and that what they say is as truthful as we have so far found. I thought the film was taking the piss out of itself when JZ Knight was revealed as the channeller of Ramtha.
A neat trick, I thought.
But since the film neglects to mention that all but one of the other talking heads are members of the cult, and only lists their 'day jobs' (so to speak), it unintentionally has revealed more truth ie it's propaganda.
Further to the Carribean Indians not being able to see Columbus' ships:
Amanda: The Columbus' boats thing sounds like typical newage bunkum to me. If humans were physically incapable of seeing things they havent seen before, we wouldn't have made it out of the Rift Valley.
harry: Yeah, the columbus boats thing struck me as wrong.
Surely, there would be any number of first-contact stories that were

interestingly, Gordon read something to me a while back about aboriginals in Botany Bay appearing to not notice Cook hanging about in his ship. the theory was that it wasn't something they could relate to, ie a big bloody ship/object, so they avoided eye contact in case it was a big angry god/dreaming type thing that would go on a destructive rampage if it got annoyed enough. sort of like an S.E.P. (somebody elses problem). I wish I could remember the book it was from. will ask the mighty one when he emergeth from the bath.

Certainly this is true of various tribes in SA and Victoria: it is disrespectful or even provocative to look at someone as they are approaching. The polite thing to do is to sit down with your back towards them and wait for them to walk up to you.
Naturally this would have clashed horribly with whitepeople because the responses are diametrically opposite, yet equally as insulting to the other party.
If this Cadigal behaved the same way then it makes sense for them not to meet the eyes of the ship and to wait for it to approach them.

Which is not the same as not being able to see it because you have no previous experience of it. Anyway, I think the point is prosaic enough ("there are some things you have to be ready to see or acknowledge, even if they are right in front of your face") as to not really need some elaborate metaphor. You can hear it every day on Dr Phil.
Are you dissing Ob's jumpers? He's family, I might have to defend his honour.

"Are you dissing Ob's jumpers?"
No, the scientist's.
"Romans of olden days couldn't tell the difference between yellow and blue."
Bizarre. Did he say why?
I heard something interesting about the realist painters. As they aged they used more yellow rather than white in their paintings and the coulouring generally got muted. These colours were what they were actually seeing due to the normal deteriorating eyesight in old age - can't remember the name of the disease. Glaucoma?
"Miranda Devine! Miranda Devine!"

harry - could be glaucoma or perhaps cataracts. or both!
I, too, am interested in knowing more about why Romans couldn't distinguish between yellow and blue. can't think of an obvious reason. they're nothing like each other on the spectrum. and if it was a genetic thing like a form of colour-blindness there'd still be a decent percentage of european descendants who would have said genetic thing.
tell us more!
more I say!
