Patience Hotspur Hogan,
We need a date.
I suggest Wednesday the 27th, subject to you-know-who surfacing of course.
I have been in contact with our Northern accomplice and am awaiting their response.
Being crap is not an excuse, it is an acceptance.

accepting being crap is being complacent, harry, and for that you must suffer.

Patience Hotspur Hogan
I'm going to write a book with a heroine called that! what a delightful name! she will be intelligent and terribly resourceful, and attractive in a quirky way, of course. a name like Patience Hotspur* commands nothing less.
* named after her stiff-upper-lip father who died in a blaze of glory doing very brave things, no doubt. eh what?
thanks for the idea, hazman.

"accepting being crap is being complacent, harry, and for that you must suffer."
# Speedy, you need to let go of your falsely constructed self-limiting boundaries. Accepting who we are is the first step to being able to love ourselves for ourselves, and thus to be able to truely love others. I suggest some deep breathing exercises to start off with....
"Patience Hotspur Hogan"
# In mine she has those adorable ringlet thingoes that cascade down her cheeks. She will be the subject of fierce competition between the dashing but rash cavalry officer Algernon Hyphen-Surname; the stoic Major Nigel Wagstaff of the Black and Tans; and boistrous Captain Reginald Flenscher of the Short and Curlies. None of whom stand a chance.
During a rearguard action in the Peninsular Campaign she disguises herself as a newly arrived Colonel and assumes command to execute a brilliant maneovre using Captain Flenscher's troops. Her ADC exclaims 'By god, sir! You've got the French by the Short and Curlies!'
Her identity is discovered when she falls from a horse and is helped up by Private Scratching who instantly, hopelessly and irretrievably falls in love with her.
I'm off to call Merchant Ivory.

no, a big pfft to Merchant Ivory. now is the time we forge a new career and set up our own production company! anyway, half of Merchant Ivory is dead, and I can't remember which one. it is time for us to eclipse them.
min: agreed. I thought that last one set in the industrial revolution was a bit of a po-faced P&P rip-off myself. although the scenes in the cotton mills were terribly well done. I do enjoy a bit of early industrial machinery.
'Speedy, you need to let go of your falsely constructed self-limiting boundaries'
hazman, you're the one limiting yourself to being crap...

My little duckie hear is fluttering at the thought of a visit, although the 25th is ringing alarm bells. I hope it's not an out-of-town bell. I'll do my utmost to be home, but.
Love those elbows! Pickering did a whole series of cartoons in the 70s about censorship that involved naked people bandaging their elbows and other people lusting after the elbows because they were the only covered bits. Must dig it out.

Pickering???
yes please! I love Pickering. somewhere in the vaults of my parents collection are Pickering annuals from the mid-late 70's. of course I didn't understnad half of them at the time but Gough was in them, so they had to be good.

Oh, he's the only reason I know anything about 70s politics (cos I was too young to care at the time). Whenever I hear about some 70s thing Gough did, I visualise Pickering's take on it. We even had his naked pollie calendars on the back of our toilet door for a few years, just above the hand-written times-table chart. I spent a lot of time in that toilet, and I know my times tables to 12 very well!

I was too young to understand anything other than
a) Gough was god, and
b) I *know* Bob Hawke isn't my father, but what's that man with dad's hair and glasses doing on telly?
(when he was president of the ACTU. it was very confusing. and he was Pres from 1969, when I was a 1yr old)
Pickering was so clever. he drew Malcolm fraser in the nood years before he dropped his pants.
