I can not believe why McClendon would be in favor of guns in parks. I read his article in todays paper but I thought he had more sense than that.
Why does it always take some screw ball with a screw loose to start shooting in the park before they realize it. Maybe since the mayor is against it, there be a light at the end of the tunnel.

I heard from a friend The Tennessean just laid off 31 more people due to declining revenues. If accurate, with this kind of reporting, its hard to imagine why.
I am disappointed that KWalt would sign his name to a piece like that. Then again, with the spectre of more layoffs, I guess going along to get along would potentially help with job security.

KA,
The Tennessean and all these community "Leaders" cannot win the argument on the facts so they have to resort to emotion and sensationalism.
Whether the issue is guns in parks or the total expected cost of the $treet$cape beautification project, does the public ever get the facts on anything? Not in this town. Its all spin.

well, it is funny how I sent an email to both the city and the county officials and have received many responses in opposition of banning guns and not one from any of the anti gun crowd trying to sway me with facts or stats. Oh wait, there is nothing they can bring to the table that shows a link and as you have point out KA, there are other city/states that have allowed firearms in parks and there has not been an issue.
So what we have is elected representatives who are more than likely receiving more opinions to allow guns than to ban them yet they are sticking by their own prejudice instead of voting in favor of the populous. “Representation” at it’s best..

Well said and from personal experiance both parents did carry and never used except target shooting and once many years ago during a ride along his detective friend needed help.
I can only guess what Hood is hearing from outside the circle that Commissioner Brockman hangs with.
I can only say my parents would have given their life to protect a child who was in danger in a Park or any other place.
"Puzzled?" Perhaps those non-elected
"swaying" people should shut up and let the public decide. Take it to the people for a vote ?
Scary thought to some.
How refreshing to have a say how OUR (not Mr.Hoods)tax dollars are spent or if folks want a law for or against banning personal safety in Parks.

I am as idealistic as the other eleven admitted liberals in this county but can not, for the life of me, understand why anyone would be fearful of any liscensed, trained adult toting a weapon. I don't go armed myself but, believe me, am firmly behind those of y'all who do. Maybe its because I grew up surrounded by firearms carried by people who were well aware of and respected the consequences of pulling a trigger. I do not want to live in a society where I am patted down from street corner to street corner. I've spent time in countries with those policies and am here to tell you...it ain't no fun.

"This is one more example of why we need to limit guns..." references Dwight Lewis in his editorial today on the McNair tragedy. Leave it to Dwight to seize yet another opportunity to exploit his (and The Tennessean's) agenda for more gun control.
Well Dwight, in response, and with all due respect to McNair's survivors who have to be decimated by recent developments, I can only say that if McNair HAD BEEN HOME WITH HIS WIFE LIKE HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN, both he and the young lady would likely still be alive.
While I respect the charitable works Steve contributed to the community and I am greatly saddened for the shocking loss Mechelle and her children must endure, Steve's choice to secretly cavort with a star-struck, impressionable young woman resulted in the ultimate consequence. Choices have consequences.
Guns don't kill people, Dwight, people kill people.

Agreed Anon. @ 4:09.
Forget the gun, McNair sealed his own destiny with the trash he surrounded himself with - his antics just got him to an avoidable destiny faster.
McNair was given more opportunities than 500 people combined - and he wasted it all.
The REAL victims are his four children.
Like I said in a previous post - if the Metro Police would have just arrested McNair like they should have, it might have attracted enough attention to force McNair to make at least a temporary separation and he might still be alive.
I don't care what Serpass or the Biddlesque-Tennessean-sports-jackasses-are-our-
*GASP*-heroes purports, everybody knows that when it turned out to be the SAME cop pulling McNair over as he did in 2003, that cop knew his ass would be on parking ticket patrol ... Uhhhh ... FOREVER and he let it slide.
So many chances that a gun had nothing to do with.

Here’s an idea, let’s put to a public vote in the upcoming city election in October regarding the city parks. Then the public will have a say so and not the ones who think they know what's best for us.

Could someone please explain to me the carry laws as they existed prior to the parks bill?
Is it legal to carry into a McDonalds? Restaurants that serve alcohol? etc.

I hate to keep beating the same drum, but in the midst of all this shooting back and forth over the gun issue, BOMA is apparently folding under developer pressure and is about to let Roper's Knob be developed.

Conservationist I feel your pain.
If BOMA and Staff makes another ECO unfriendly mi$take it would not surprise me.
Way to many political "non-profit$" shrimp boils, wine downing events clouding up their common sense and taking up time to put any real thought behind this day-dream plan.
Good luck and do speak up at the BOMA meeting.

No public comments on a vote, I do wonder how much speaking opportunity the developer will have.
I guess they figure your elected is your voice of reason in this or should be anyway.
