Those are some pretty significant differences in speed! Maybe Windows is backdooring everything you do online back to MS headquarters. 
Anarki, can you recommend some excellent freeware antivirus software? I uninstalled Norton again and am currently logging on unprotected, but my computer runs a lot better without the Norton. Is there something that works really well and is updated frequently that can be easily downloaded? It would need to be compatible with Win98SE. I appreciate your thoughts.

AntiVirus: well, the best free one right now i guess is AVG, get it here
i use it personally with Vista (stupid thing would not recognize my old AOL active virus shield so i had to use AVG)
Active Virus Shield WAS also good, till late last year when AOL switched from Kaspersky to Mcaffe
so anyway: AVG, its secure, stable, light, AND 98SE compatible!
oh, when you install it, just disable the option to do daily scans, takes up a bit of memory whenever you start up the pc!

only drawback is that once every while its license expires and you have to download a new one from the antivir website.. too cumbersome for me
perhaps your connection is not a constant...you may have to make several tests at different times of the day,then figure an average.
Yeah, i am working on it, however: i have tried uploading lots of stuff with Vista, always gave me around 400-450 kbps, so when i get such a number in linux, makes me wonder..
tell you what, better than testing with a server that might or might not be busy at different times, i'll just upload something on a space i have, which is almost always without loads

Hi Anarki, I downloaded AVG a couple days ago and it seems to be working pretty well. Thanks very much for the suggestion! One thing I can't find though, can AVG detect if some hacker is trying to scan or hijack my computer? Or is that the function of a firewall? My Norton program had some sort of software firewall that would occasionally tell me that I was being attacked. Maybe it was just crying wolf.
Hey there! hmm.. well, for firewall, you could look up COMODO firewall, it is excellent, or maybe ZoneAlarm, the free version.. i really am sorry cant put up links right now, just look them up on google..
oh and Norton proggz have a habit of eating up memory, giving false alarms, and failing actual intrusion detection and protection.. sigh.
