"I think the wuuurld, including the US, will do the diplomatic doo, until something horrible happens. Until then, the rest is just words, smoke and mirrors -- and the mullahs understand how to take advantage of sincere diplomatic efforts on the part of the rest of the world."
Sadly, I think you are quite right.

There has been no direct communication between Iran and the U.S. since the hostages in 1979 and Jimmy Carter's screw up. THen again, neither side has cared about communications until now. I have to laugh, though, when people say "Bush should just negotiate" and infer that he's letting the other countries do the negotiating.

Cowgirl, I know. The situation's appalling.
Anna, the kicker is -- Bush actually has been doing negotiation, as he did before we went into Iraq, and as he even did before Afganistan -- remember how he pleaded, on international TV, with the Taliban to turn over Bin Laden ... ?

"German Chancellor Angela Merkel made a landmark speech to the American Jewish Committee"
I think it is indeed a landmark event that Chancellor Schroeder was invited to this anniversary and Chancellor Merkel came due to the elections in Germany in the meantime. Merkel is the first chancellor to speek at the AJC.
The speech itself, however, was not landmark, I believe. She and other German chancellors said the same things in the past.
